I have gotten my money's worth out of these factory seconds.
Probably comes down to your use case ... if that's the type of boot you are looking for, the AE sales are when to get it. For all AE's flaws, Thursday isn't better, its a half step down. But maybe Thursday has some different style or use case or color or something you really prefer instead.I wonder if I should spend more money, and buy Thursday Boots instead.
Why didn't you just look to other brands by then? I can imagine getting the same or better quality for less than you paid for the shoes and the resole. My dad bought me a pair of AE wingtips when I started in business in 1970. When I was paying, I usually got Florsheim Imperials. About 10 years before I retired, I realized that I could afford AE wingtips, and got a couple pairs. They were comfortable, good looking shoes. Since I retired, the fact that they can last 20 years if you get them resoled a couple times isn’t that importan. But I really enjoyed wearing them at work.
My gripe with AE is that the selection keeps getting smaller. I can’t blame them too much—It’s hard to be a domestic shoemaker. But I was trying to get a pair of spectator shoes. It took me a long time to decide whether I wanted black and white (the choice of swing dancers) or brown and white. By the time I made up my mind, all that was available were brown and white golf spikes. I had to buy a pair, and immediately send them back to be resoled, replacing the spiky sole with a regular sole. I got a nice pair of spectator shoes out of the deal.
