Hello. What a great group! I have a question concerning the Fed IV. I recently bought a Federation IV Deluxe in moonstone from Hats Direct and the felt is thick. It's a heavy hat, and I really like it. A couple of weeks ago I bought a brown Fed IV Deluxe on ebay and the felt is much thinner. The difference between the two is significant. Is it common for two Deluxe Feds to be so different? Thanks.

Good afternoon everyone. Akubra newbie here and wanted an opinion on a couple of hats. I'm looking for an adventuring hat. I have plans to visit the Cliff Palace and a few other ruins this year. It'll be the summer in Texas and the southwest. My usual hat is an old Stetson western that's about 35 years old, covered in sweat stains, dust, gun powder, etc. It's "well loved" but getting ugly. I'd like to try something different.

Akubra Campdraft versus Adventurer
I like both of these hats. But I can get the Adventurer in the color I like (mid-brown). I prefer the snap brim and brim tape on the CD though but I can't find a color I like in it.

My question comes to this, do I go for my second choice of the Adventurer as it's available, or do I wait on the possibility of a CD in the right color showing up?
Both are open crown.
Would there be any advantage to one over the other other than looks?

Might you want a wider brim for the Texas summer sun?

The Territory brim covers so much of the sky that I can scarcely tell that it is sunny.

Wide brims do help a lot. I am mainly concerned with physical properties. Is there a quality difference between the two? Felt thicker on one vs the other? Stiffness?
There are no hatters in my area other than for western hats. I don't have a way to compare them other than pictures or asking questions. Sorry if this is a dead horse topic.

Hmm... That's what I'm wondering. Does anyone here have both a CD and Adventurer that can extol one over the other?

Aren’t they both made with the same felt? I believe they are both Akubra’s Imperial grade felt…at least all the current Campdrafts.

The Adventurer isn’t a popular hat here. I’m sure it’s a solid hat as Akubras are, but the Federation IV is a similar hat and the one we see more around here.

I have no idea if they are the same felt. I don't know about the Fed IV either. I was going off of what I was able to find and I wasn't able to find a Fed IV. I do like those as well. I'm going to keep looking and see what I can find.

This goes back a ways and things may have changed. The CD has a stiffer brim than did my Adventurer. Do you really want a felt hat for the Texas summer heat? My hiking hat for those SW summer days is a straw, well vented Stetson. Cost me under a hundred and has lasted lots of summers.

I think I recall that the name “Adventurer” was used on two different models of Akubra. If you mean the current David Morgan hat then according to the David Morgan website it is an imperial felt which is the same as the current Campdraft and Fed IV. That’s not to say they are identical, but I suspect they are close as to stiffness etc. The Fed IV is exclusive through The Hattery aka Hats Direct. The Adventurer has different dimensions, but there is a strong family resemblance with the Fed IV.

I've been wearing a felt Stetson in the summer. My only straw wasn't near as comfortable. The heat isn't bad it's the sun beating down that's the problem.

If they're all the same felt then it's down to style and availability. I didn't find the color I like at The Hattery. I might have missed it. I'll take another look.

I would say similar felt with the brim a touch stiffer on the Adventurer.

Hi, Does anyone know the "unbashed" crown height of the Pastoralist vs the Campdraft? The seem similar in brim size etc. but it's hard to tell on the crown. The Pastoralist is currently avaialble in a few colors that I'm interested in that don't seem to be offered in the Campdraft, Thanks in advance for any info!

My biggest complaint with the Campdraft is the too low (for me) crown. Personally, any lower crown height would disqualify any hat. Then again I’m a size 62cm and I like tall crowns so what works for me definitely isn’t for everyone.

I didn't see anything on the website about being to the crease.
Pastoralist:
Crown Height- ~ 92mm (measured from where low point on crown to base of the internal leather sweat band)
