Akubra Lightning Ridge

DelMonico's in New Haven has some Akubras too...but only four styles. I got my Banjo Paterson from them. I try to patronize David Morgan when I can...but since I'm in the same state the tax gets added. So from now on I'll just wait until I get to the western side of the state and visit in person, which'll save the postage.
One of the reasons I went with the Lightning Ridge in sand was because I believe the brim is a little wider and provides a tad more shade from the sun. I guess if you pushed my back against the wall, I'd say I like the Banjo a bit better but for the life of me couldn't explain why. "Wouldn't want to live on the difference "- to quote John Wayne.
And Neophyte, just to confuse things, I prefer the Banjo on you!

I wonder if the Lightening Ridge is going to be available going forward. It is not on the Akubra Website, and I did not see it on the EA website either.

Well, guys, due to your powers of discernment, I have decided on the Lightning Ridge.....and just now placed my order with David Morgan.

I sent a note to both Delmonicos and Everything Australian. Got a great note from Sam this morning stating that he can't get the Lightning Ridge in Everything Australian because it is a special David Morgan produced hat by Akubra. So that settled that.

Just got off a 75 mile motorcycle ride this morning.....cool 68 degrees, and Spring in the air everywhere. I THINK best when on a ride, so I made up my mind as I was travelling a twisty road through the swamp....not a care in the world....and thought....Well, I'm going to order it as SOON as I get home. So, 5 minutes ago it's a done deal.

I sent a special note to David to pick me an Opal that "Sparkles in the Sun." What the hell!!

Now, I'm thinking the Open Road and the Lightning Ridge should arrive at the same time. Sort of like Chrismas in April!!

Congrats, I hope you enjoy the Lightning Ridge. It's a great hat. Perhaps DM's shipping will be faster than expected. I know that, for myself in East Tennessee, the estimated shipping time is 5 days. My DM purchases have always arrived in 3.

One more note. Due to Sam at EA's super quick reply, I felt I had to order something from him. Sooooooo.......

One CAMPDRAFT SILVERBELLY (with a 3 month wait)

This way, it will be like someone sent me a present in July of a hat I really like! (I CAN convince myself of this type of doublethink!)

Now I think I'll have most bases covered.

Christmas in April!
Woke up to the postlady blowing her horn for me to come out and receive my packages! Surprise: there were 2! I was still in my PJ's and could hardly wait to open them.
First was an Ebay purchase of a Vintage Stetson Open Road I thought I'd take a chance on since it was the soft Royal Deluxe. It's a tad small, but I think it will work. Sweet everyday hat!
Then the package from David Morgan. Wow, got here in 2 days! When I took the Lightning Ridge out, I was STUNNED at how nice it was. Put it on and it felt like a HALO! Perfect.
Went to check it out in full length mirror, PJ's and all, and was thinking: This is the perfect hat for me! (Glad the wife was out of town visiting her sister) So I strolled around the house and made and drank my morning coffee out on the deck.....I live in the swamp.....and all was right with the world. I had definitely made the right choice.

Lo and behold, while on my second cup of award winning Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, my UPS man turns in the drive! Mark greeted me with "Nice outfit, Mitch!" And said, is this ANOTHER hat I have for you?

And it WAS! I had impulsively bought a Stetson Open Road Silverbelly from Rod's Western because they had a closeout at $99. Could not pass it up.
You've all heard of "3 Dog Night?" Well, this was a "3 Hat Day!"

Best day I've had in a long time! I wish this old man could do pictures....I'd look kind of silly in my PJ's and LR, but I'm digitally challenged at the moment.

And, to put the icing on the cake, Sam from EA sent me a kind note saying he'd just shipped the Campdraft in Bluegrass! I had reconsidered and felt that due to health issues, I need the hat as soon as possible. (To explain without seeming tragic.....the Adbominal Aortic Aneurysm I have was checked a couple of days ago and it's very huge....inoperable, and doc says I better do everything I want to do NOW.) So, seems like life has suddenly "sped up."

So.....TODAY is a GREAT DAY!

thanks for the help, guys!

Banjo was my first felt years, I bought both colors and honestly wish I had passed on the charcoal. I am thinking about a Lightning Ridge in sand next fall. Of all the hats I have bought since the Banjo in Heritage Fawn has seen the most use.

Strangely enough, my brother saw my Lightning Ridge and says, "I really like that hat! Maybe I can get one someday."

His wife has stage 3 colon cancer and he is almost chained to his house and yard taking care of her so I looked over on the Bay today and found a Banjo Paterson, old, but in perfect condition in 7 5/8, his size ( I think!!) So I bid on it and bought it.

Gonna surprise him with it when it arrives. If it doesn't fit him, i'll just list it on the FL. I'm sure someone else will want one.

In the meantime, I'm really enjoying the Lightning Ridge!!

Akubra Lightning Ridge's availability (mid 2014)

Hi all,

this is my first post here at the FL. I recently bough a Banjo Patterson, which made me interested in Akubra hats. I noticed that the official website does not list a number of models (such as the Bushman), and one of the missing is the Lightning Ridge. My question is, is the LR still made but just for the American market, or is it on its way out (until stocks last!)?

Best

That's an excellent question. DavidMorgan still sells the Lightning Ridge in the US. You might want to send them an email with this question.

Oh, and welcome to the Lounge!

Akubra does do some hats just for specific customers. Most Loungers are familiar with the Federation hats that are exclusive to Hats Direct. So it is possible that David Morgan has a similar deal on the Lightning Ridge. But asking them would be the best way to confirm.

Oh, and welcome to the Lounge!

Thanks! I did in fact contact David Morgan, and the LR is especially made for them and thus is not on the Akubra Australia website but it is not going to be discontinued anytime soon!

What did you not like about the charcoal banjo? I'm interested in both. My concern with the fawn is blending too much with my skin; but concerned that the charcoal is too hot for summer?

Does anyone know the quality of fur on the Lightning Ridge? Also, I am personally not a huge fan of the opal. I thought I read somewhere that there were different hat bands, but I did not see an option for it on the David Morgan website. And is the sweatband of good quality? I apologise for all the questions. I'm pretty new at this.

Akubra felt, in either grade, is adequate. It’s not great, but it’s generally very serviceable and very rugged.

I don’t know anything about the exact hat you are looking at, but the good thing about dealing with David Morgan is that you can call and speak with a salesperson.

The sweats that Akubra uses are my biggest issue with the brand. They are comfortable and seem to last, but they are notorious for shrinking. A lot of us buy Akubras a full size too big knowing that the sweat will shrink. There is a huge amount of information on this in various threads. Check out the Akubra Overload thread and spend a couple hours reading. Again, a call to David Morgan is in order if you get serious. They can address the unique Akubra sizing issues.

Akubra makes certain models and colors just for certain retailers. I don’t know the availability of the Akubra hat(s) you’re looking at, but check out The Hattery, Everything Australian, and Hats by the Hundred. If you can wait an additional week and are willing to put up with the pain of trans-Pacific shipping, your best deals will be buying from an Australian retailer.
