Hi everyone,
I am new to the Fedora Lounge but have been combing through threads for a couple of months now and have finally decided to surface.
A little bit about me—
I just graduated from college in New England and am now employed in Austin Texas as a geologist. I have a longstanding interest in bench-top crafting, I do hobby-level leatherworking and have recently purchased a cylinder bed industrial sewing machine and am learning to make some clothes and leather goods. It’s a lot of fun and I love to work with leather which is why I am coming to you all today for advice on ordering an Aero Leather jacket.
I have wanted a quality leather jacket for some time and have finally found myself in a financial position (aka employed vs. student) where I can make the purchase. After significant research, I found myself gravitating towards the Aero jacket models- specifically the Sheene. I ordered a fit jacket from Carrie at Thurston Bros. which arrived yesterday. The fit jacket is a Café Racer model in size 40, with measurements as follows:
Back length--26 inches
Sleeve length--25.75 inches
Pit-to-pit--23 inches
Shoulder--19 inches
Waist/bottom hem--19.5 inches
Front length--20.75 inches
My personal measurement are:
Chest—43 inches
Waist—34 inches
Shoulder—19 inches
Height—5’ 10”
Weight—185 inches
I played rugby in school but after having a brain surgery and radiation my tacking days are over so I haunt the weight room now instead of the pitch. I have a rugby influenced physique but post recovery have now thinned out to a maintenance weight of ~185 so I am looking for a jacket that fits me pretty well at my current shape/weight.
I have included the photos I took with the fit jacket on and was hoping for some feedback on how it sits. I took two full sets of photos in two different outdoor lighting.
My overall impression thus far has been that the chest and waist fit comfortably/snug in the chest and waist but have limited mobility in the shoulders. It seems as if the armholes are a little low, because I can cross my arms over each other in the front with ease, but can’t lift my arms very far in front with the elbows bent (as if reaching into an overhead cabinet). The fit jacket is made in the brown CXL FQHH so maybe the mobility range is limited primarily by the material but it feels to me that the front of the armpit is where the jacket is binding. Carrie at Thurston Bros. gave the fit a thumbs up and thought that breaking the jacket in will make the jacket a little less restrictive. She also noted that the range of motion I was getting in the jacket is pretty normal for the model. I trust her advice but I wanted to get some second opinions because I would like to
I should mention that I do not ride and plan on wearing this jacket exclusively in a casual and work setting (Geology as a profession leaves a lot of interpretive room in the dress code).
The order I am currently looking at placing is as follows:
Model: Sheene
-Black or Cordovan CXL FQHH (still cannot decide)
-Olive drill lining (possibly with Olive cotton sateen in the sleeves)
-V-yoked back (shallow, and not the western/curved single point)
-Internal and external kidney panel (I think that the kidney panel visually reduces the weight of the shoulders, which I like)
-Shoulder Gussets (I like how they look, but seem to gather a lot of material behind the upper arm)
-Considering replacing the highwayman collar with the August, and I’m toying with the idea of having hidden collar snaps installed
-Zip sleeves, in the back seam as on the CR
-Two cat’s eye angled chest pockets
-Two zippered handwarmer pockets
-Two unfastened interior facing pockets
-Brass main zip with horsehide pull
-Brass ball chain zipper pulls
Sorry to spew out my numerous questions and uncertainties, but any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for both your feedback and for all of the accumulated knowledge here I have already sorted through!
