This, exactly. There is usually a reason a company institutes a new policy like a non-refundable deposit. Ken is also correct about time: even when all goes right on the money end I’m sure there are orders that take up so much time with back and forth communication that it bleeds away profit. Time is indeed money.
If what Ken said about the order history of the OP is accurate then I’m surprised that Aero still accepted orders from him at all. Out of six orders in the last five years three were canceled and three returned for full refund. No wonder they instituted the non-refundable deposit.

There something lacking with the OP story about hitting a deer and needing a refund on his jacket order. If he had insurance I would think a totaled car would require pay off of more than the deposit he is requesting from Aero. If the car is not totaled It seems insurance with cover repairs less deductible. Considering the way the story was presented here, omitting material background information I would not be surprised the alleged car accident has nothing do due with the OP wanting to cancel yet another order with Aero
Do you know something about french insurances ?
