Hi all,

i'm considering an Aero Highwayman. I live in Perth Australia and the climate is a fair bit warmer than Perth, Scotland! Whats the lightest weight version Aero has made either past or present? I love the look of the Horsehide... I've seen a Thunder Bay edition which claims to use lighter more supple leather that the standard FQHH Highwayman

Advice appreciated.

The Thunder Bay is a different jacket, and in fact a warmer one.

For a light leather from Aero, I would look at the quite excellent goatskin and goat suedes. Beautiful drape.

Thanks for your response,

I have seen the Thunder Bay jacket you refer to but I’ve also been looking at a Highwayman, Thunder Bay ‘edition’ on the used market. I was wondering if anyone had seen or had experience of this jacket.

That’s not an edition of the jacket. Aero has a lot of different labels so you can request one if you like it better.

Ok, so is this a standard FQHH highwayman?

Hides that are lighter - but still really durable - would be goatskin, Vicenza and jerky horsehide. I have jackets in all three and the goatskin doesn't patina much, the jerky will after time and the Vicenza fairly minimally. I like the goat best in terms being able to wear it in slightly warmer weather.

Aero's goat also has a really luxurious temper to it I find, more so than the Vicenza. Jerky comes closer but the goat is unique in this respect.

As I thought, I may have to compromise patina over wearability.

Thanks for the insight.

Depends what kind of patina you want. The jerky would give the most evident patina (russet base), but Vicenza will patina too, after a while.

Jerky is very wearable and might fit the bill - you can ask Aero to select the lightest weight they have of a hide that you've chosen.

If you are considering a light-coloured jacket, I would recommend unfinished HH.
This combined with a light cotton drill makes a good jacket for sunny, warmer days.

That looks great! I was under the impression that steerhide was a thick hide, I have a steerhide Schott which is very thick.

Ok, so is this a standard FQHH highwayman?

That´s in fact the "Zip-Sleeve Highwayman". The standard version doesn´t come with a front yoke but with a pocket in the upper left panel.

There is also the "59er Highwayman" that comes with a straight front yoke.

You may want to look at the respective pictures on Aero´s website to get the exact pattern and specs you are looking for, before decising on the leather (Aero do discourage certain leathers for some patterns),

cotton tartan lining is very nice in warmer conditions, wears like poplin shirts.

Aero is getting a new mid weight leather from Horween called Pinnacle. It’s only matter of weeks away, worth the wait to see how it wears.

Theres also a thread on Highwayman’s, it has all the different HWYmans except the 59er one.

The Thunderbay is just a label. There’s also a Highwayman label. The confusing part is that there is a Thunderbay jacket that is shearling lined, sort of looks like a Highwayman with a belt, that would be a bit warm for down under.

I have several Aero's and think FQHH is likely too heavy for your use. I also have an Aero goat skin as well as a jerky HH, but my favorites are a couple of Aero's with Vicenza HH. My advice is go with either black or seal Vicenza HH and cotton drill lining. Since you live in a warm climate, order without knit wristers. Your greatest challenge will be nailing down sizing.
