I just purchased my first pipe and I was wondering what brands of tobacco lounge users had found to be enjoyable. Thanks!

There are so many out there. I like many of Dunhill's tobaccos; I'm working through a tin of Light Flake at the moment. When I buy tobacco, I usually just go into the shop and smell the bulk varieties they offer (most shops have their own), and pick one that smells nice. There are so many possibilities, I don't think I've returned to a favorite in the three or so years I've been smoking a pipe.

Tobacco Review is dizzying in it's completeness and detail.

I'm new to it, myself, having smoked cigars for ten years, now.
What I've found, so far, in my few months of pipes :

5100
Dunhill NightCap
Ashton Artisan

I've only had one bowl, however the Rattray's #7 Reserve is quite good. Bit me like I don't know what, but that was my fault, not the tobacco.

For tabac you can get anywhere I prefer Carter Hall

For a more special tabac I am working on a tin of Pal O' Mine and I cannot say enough about it's quality aroma and smooth burning properties.

Almost anything from McLelland is grea as well.

What type of Pipe did you get?

Peterson's Sherlock Holmes
Peterson's Sunset Breeze
Dunhill's London Mixture
Mac Baren Tobacco's Navy Flake

I've enjoyed all these.

A great place for pipe and tobacco info is:
http://www.aspipes.org/
the homepage for the "alt.smokers.pipes" newsgroup.

It's a great group, full of friendly and helpful people.

Well you have lots of choices!

My faves are:

Three Nuns
Dunhill Royal Yacht
MacBarens Scottish Mixture
Amphora Full Aroma

My best advice is to buy a tin or pouch or two of different ones and experiment.

My regular smoke for the last year or so has been Mac Baren 'Dark Twist'. It's a rollcake tobacco that is a good crossover between aromatics and heartier blends.
Another great all -around tobacco is the 'King Arthur' blend from the piperoom.com.

To echo the others, go to your local tobacconist and try lots of different smokes.

My two favorites are: McClelland 2010 and 2015.
Squadron Leader is great English, and Edgeworth Ready Rubbed is a good OTC burley to keep on hand too.

Unfortunately, Three Nuns (even the weak reproduction of the classic original) and Amphora are not available in the US. Among the Drugstore pipe tobaccos (these are primarily burley tobacco) I agree Carter Hall is a good one, as are Granger, Walnut, and Hickory.

If you want to try a tobacco of the "English" kind, meaning with Latakia, the smoky fire-cured tobacco, I'd recommend Dunhill's Early Morning Pipe. It's very good, as all tobaccos I tried that are sold under the Dunhill name, and it's not heavy. (The "strong" tobaccos are actually the harmless looking, light brown Virginia ones, not those that have a heavy scent.)

But the brands that the gentlemen above listed are fine, of course.

Keep in mind, though, that the flavoured ones (maple and whatnot) might have a much nicer scent for others than for the one who smokes - in fact, for the latter in can be between watery and even quite unpleasant. If you leave the room and come back later, you'll smell the flavour and be disappointed it didn't taste like that.

You are 100% on the mark. I don't like heavily cased tobaccos at all. 98% of my smoking involves English, or various VA mixtures. After years of pipe smoking, the only aromatic I regularly smoke is Pipeworks and Wilkie Vermont Maple. I don't know how Carole (the owner) does it, but she manages to blend a maple cased tobacco that actually tastes of maple yet smokes cool and dry. Actually, every blend she offers is of the highest quality and she is a wonderful person as well.

I did in fact get some carter hall to bein with. We'll see how I like it. The pipe came off a certain forbidden website, its nothing special because I am rather short of cash, as long as it works I will be satisfied.

Pal O Mine is a high Latkia blend.

I Used to smoke Kingfisher from the UK but it's expensive here.

I agree that Granger is decent for pharmacy tabac. In fact I rather like term "Pharmacy tobacco".

I got a Bing's Favorite (Savinelli) on eBay as an estate pipe. It was listed as "you MAY want to have the bit renewed," it arrived badly oxidized and icky. After a lot of cleaning and buffing, it looks pretty respectable now and no longer STINKS. Geez... Git sellers...

And in Statesville, NC yesterday I bought two tins of tobacco. A Cornell & Diehl Sunset Harbor flake, and McClelland's British Woods.

Maybe after dinner tonight....

Wow, Scotrace

That sounds great. I have always been admired the way Bing used his pipe. That is a great brand and I hope the cleaning does it well. That is to say may it never bite your tounge!

Picked up a can of Frog Morton yesterday. Will have to give it a try soon. It's just so darned cold outside...

I have wanted to try that one for a while. I even looked at it today while II was getting some players navy cuts at the local shop. Let me know how it is.
