A Man in a Hat... ?

To me a hat literally (as well as figuratively!) tops off an outfit.

As I don't generally wear a coat with a hood, and prefer not to carry an umbrella (that's growing up through university in Belfast winters for you, where once the rain is heavy nough for a brolly, it's always too windy to be able to wield one!), a hat became a logical accessory for me. Also since I embraced my advancing baldness and went for the full shave, sun protection and heat retention became much more important. Practical reasons aside, a hat simply completes an outfit. Any monkey can wear a suit or some nice clothes - look at those premiership footballers in their two piece suits, Harry Hill collared shirts and (if they can manage a tie or have someone to do it for them) tie knots the size of grapefruits.... no class, no sophistication. Knowing how to wear an outfit, how to accesorise it, is at least as important as the outfit itself - cufflinks, tie clip, the right shoes, and coordinating outerwear - coat and hat - complete the picture, show that this is someone who knows what they are doing.

I only used to wear a hat on what I knew would turn out to be... long hot days in the sun.

Now, since I've gotten the hat bug... I wear them on short outings claiming necessity.

Who am I fooling, eh? :D

The damn things just look too cool.

You''re right here, Edward; and in the UK, with its mild winters (and enormous car use) it is the coordinating outerwear of coat and hat that is especially neglected.
