First thing that comes to mind is a sense of style. But, I like to look at it as a sense of Sensibility.

What comes to mind when you see someone in a hat? What's your perception of yourself, in a hat?

just askin,

I guess I think personality.

Frankly, fedoras and other hats of yester-year have so much more personality than the modern hats of today. A person can have a fedora built to their liking (felt color choice, brim size, bash style, ribbon style). Next thing you know, you find that your hat really fits your personality, and has become somewhat of an extension of its wearer.

Maybe that's why I wear a hat. Its not necessarily to protect my head from the sun, or the elements, but to show who I am as a person.

...or maybe I'm just nuts...

my perception is, i think people think i'm [EDIT:Unacceptable language. =HJ] weird wearing it or there smiling and laughing.
i wear it to keep the sun off my skin. wide brim. and to hide when i don't want people to look at me.

whenever i saw someone in a cool hat i always smiled or checked out the hat or complemented.

I agree with Scion, and I would also like to add different hats (each with their different purposes) add another dimension to your personality.

A man who is comfortable in a hat is a man that is comfortable in some aspect of himself. A man who is comfortable in many hats is a man who is comfortable in many aspects of himself.

When I see a man in a hat (besides a ball cap), I honestly find myself more prone to strike a conversation. And I find that when I wear hats (Fedoras, cowboy straw, wool caps, etc.) people are more prone to talk to me.

[huh] I guess people just like a guy who can present himself well with a decent hat.

I am a legal alien in... it takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile..-quotes again, from a genial man.

To take the Dumbest comments I've ever heard - I took already more severe ones. But I will never take down my hat just because of them.

I am not always wearing my hats I admit -on windy days for example-, only when I feel like.
As a teenager and in my early 20's (and some 20 kilos lighter) liked to wear the beret.- It also received comments: Paramilitary, etc...

Nowadays once I get a comment I always look at the commenter and ask myself whether he is my role model or not. I grinned in that Skinheads face calling me a dirty Jew - just like my avatar.

I lately saw another man wearing a Panama in the summer I raised mine and he smiled back, I walked. It felt good to see another hat wearer.

Regards:

Tom

Great quote Undertow:

I would guess that in the heat of the summer... fashion and style have little to do with bringing your own shade to the party. :D

Personally from a woman's perspective I think a hat is sexy. I think a fedora especially gives a man an air of mystique and class. I'm mostly used to military covers but even those just add a certain something that makes a man look more dashing. I say keep on wearing the hats and who cares if people think you're odd. I would think an appreciative look or double take from the ladies would make that worth it. Heck I wish I could get my husband to wear a fedora but the most I get to see him in are his various covers.

Homurist Dave Barry once quipped, "A hat should be removed upon entering a house, and left off." I agree with the first part. :D

I generally don't wear hats, and have no idea how I'd look in one. I do have a cheap straw ($15.00) that I bought from a car club to wear when attending one of their shows, but I've never looked at myself while wearing it - it tends to remain in the trunk.

I've always thought the top hat showed great wealth and class, like the one on Robert Benchley's head in my new avatar, except when worn by rockers. (I just remembered that I have a top hat made of glass! It's too heavy to wear, of course!)

Fedoras have always looked good to me. I love seing them in old movies and movies set in the golden era. Since joining the Fedora Lounge, I watch them more closely than ever. :)

Someday, I'll have to go to a hat shop and try out a few colors and styles, but something tells me I'll end up with a fedora.

For me, it's not just my sense of style, and my general old-fashioned-ness, but a hat is a practical item. It keeps the sun out of my eyes, and off my neck and face. When it's raining, it (sort of) helps keep me dry. The brim also acts as "feelers", so while I am at work in the lumberyard, I can feel the brim hit something before my head whacks into it!
