Hello, fellow hat Friends!
I thought I’d share a little sampling of the vintage TONAK hat bodies that Gus generously passed along to me from Batsakes Hat Shop in Cincinnati.
These hat bodies date from the late 1960s and 1970s, with the majority coming from the 1980s. Along with them came a wonderful collection of Gus’s original sheepskin leather sweatbands. My plan is to give these beautiful vintage materials a new life by making traditional open-crown hats, primarily with brim widths ranging from 2” to 2½”, focusing on sizes 56–60 cm. There’s something incredibly special about working with materials that have been waiting decades to become finished hats.
I’m looking forward to sharing the process with everyone here as these vintage hat bodies gradually find their way back into the world as wearable pieces of hat making history.
Keeping the tradition alive, one hat at a time!
