A History of Horror with Mark Gatiss

Is anyone else watching this on the BBC? I am not a horror buff, but I am finding this so interesting! Lon Chaney's makeup kit and onwards.

And Carla Laemmle is still beautiful.

Confirmed horror fan here. Also a fan of Gatiss (from League of Gentlemen, but even moreso his Lucifer Box novels). Lovely to see dear Oakley Court in Part II.

I missed the first part but caught the second - I grew up watching all the Hammer Horror/Roger Corman movies - was disappointed they didn't mention my personal favourite - The Creeping Flesh but I don't think this was produced by either Hammer or Corman - but loved hearing all the background stories and the interviews with Peter Cushing and Vincent Price. Looking forward to the next part.....

I have missed each episode when it was broadcast, but it's of course on iPlayer! Well worth a watch.

I've been watching it on Iplayer too. Part 3 tonight. It's been a pretty fun and informative watch, and Mr Gatiss was always my favourite "Gentleman". He's been serving up lots of "special stuff" on the BBC recently - his First Men in the Moon was a real treat! If you haven't seen it, it's also on IPlayer.

I think my favourite part of the History of Horror was seeing the set for the Lon Chaney Phantom of the Opera as it is today - beautiful, and so atmospheric.

I was disappointed that my own favourite, dear old Dr Phibes didn't get a mention - but it's also not a Hammer, Amicus or Corman. Still, it was fun to see Price and Cushing jawing away like a couple of old sweeties!

I also wished they'd shown a little from Peter Cushing's appearance on Jim'll Fix It. As a tribute to his wife, who had passed away a few years earlier, he named a new breed of rose after her.

I have loved this programme!

Like Mr Gatiss I have been a horror fan since childhood and I guess we must be of an age. I found it quite spooky when he showed his copy of the Alan Frank History of Horror book in episode one, which I also treasured as a child. And then in the next episode he talked about being banned from buying House of Hammer magazine when his parents found out about the macabre stories he was writing at school. The exact same thing happened to me.

I wish I still had my House of Hammer collection...

I hadn't heard of that film before, and I was reading up about it. I had no idea that the "freak shows" kept going for so long, or that people were pretty much bought by the circus owners. So interesting.
