it is here, it is custom when you turn 30 and not engaged, married or anything, your friends show up to 'surprise' you and you get douched in large amounts of pepper. But that tradition is getting more and more outdated.

I imagine that particular procedure would be quite surprising and potentially painful...

Damn right it is (and should be).... here in the UK, the average age to get married is now early 30s, if memory serves. And a good thing too.... while obviously it takes different strokes for different folks, the idea of being married with three kids and living in a house in the same village five minutes from the house your parents brought you up in and where they still live by the age of twenty-five (as was the case with many of my school classmates) quite firghtens me. I'm absolutely convinced that I wasn't really myself until I hit 30...
