...from the post in the Rocky Horror outfit, I would say you aren't fat, and 5'10" isn't short.

Ah, I feel big realtively to myself at the minute as I've put on two stone (28lbs) in the last year and don't seem able to shift it..... I've been this weight before, but never had to go up to the waist size I am currently, so it's kind of an issue for me. At five ten, I'm taller than the average, I just never got over stopping growing short of six foot. Didn't help that I thought for years I was five eleven, until a doctor correct me! :( lol

Isn't a "lecturer" a professor?

Eh.... kind of. In the US, I would be a professor, yes, but over here professor is a title right at the top of the tree which not everyone reaches, and which you have to be promoted to along a chain of lecturer, senior lecturer, reader, professor. It's very, very rare for anyone to make professor shy of 40. I'm realistically hoping I might get there by 45.

Academia over here is very different than in the US in anorher key aspect: the financial! I gather academics are much better paid in the US... over here, well, I can't complain, I can keep a roof over my head and I can afford to go to the theatre once in a while and indulge a hobby or two, but I'm certainly not as well off as I gather I'd be in the US. If I'd gone into practice in a City firm, I'd be earning by now approximately three times what I do. The average starting salary in a city of London law firm is roughly equal to what I'm earning now after the best part of a decade in the University; one of my colleagues came to our department about six years ago from practice - and took a salary cut of 50% in the process. She's unlikely by now to be even close to what she was earning back then, let alone what she would be earning by now had she stayed with the firm. Still, I wouldn't be happy in practice, so what's the money worth, really (so I keep telling myself, anyhow!).

We do have the lecturer title in the US, but it's more of a part-time position. I was considered a lecturer when I taught a few English Composition courses at one university, but at another I was called an "adjunct professor" for doing the same thing. [huh]

Yeah, the lecturers I knew at ISU were all instructors that didn't have masters degrees.

When I left college, a lot of lecturers were getting phased out. The administration wanted instructors to at least have a masters degree- preferably a PhD.

when I look in the mirror, I see short (5'10"), ... Hopefully others' mileage will vary on that.

Edward, you're actually pretty close to average--you want short, shall I tell you of the class of sawed-off I am? (Anywhere from 5'2" to 5'6", depending on posture and how much some ill-advised sort has been hacking me off--normal standing is about 5'4", but when I'm pushed too far, my spine straightens a little more, a few other things shift and I gain a measured, not merely appearance of, additional two inches.:eek: )

thanks! It certainly is interesting! I work with the prop archivists mainly (which is dealing with props from the last 15 years approx.), but occasionally get to work with the photo and poster archivists - whose collections go back to 1914! I'm hoping to get enough experience to assist with film preservation. Or home entertainment creative content. Or anything above the virtual secretary position I'm holding down at the moment :p

Edward, for some reason this reminds me of what my mother frequently tells my 5'5" self;

"Your father was 6'2" and I'm 5'11"...you're supposed to be taller!"

Oops, sorry Mom, guess I just forgot to keep growing. My fault, clearly. ;)
