More thank yous to you all for your compliments, and holy envy;). If I had Douglas' camera set-up, the hat would be faithfully presnted, and I realize that in the side shots of me wearing it, I didn't really pull it down as much as I could have, it does appear to be riding slightly high, but it in fact sits just fine and fits like a glove. I know how it feels to read the posts from Loungers who make these miracle finds. Now I know how it feels to post one. I would simply see it as en encouragement to never stop looking...ever.

I think it's a late forties hat.

You have a very nice Playboy....but I don't agree on the late 40's date. I'd say late 50's at the oldest and more likely in the 1960's. You know someone must play the devil's advocate.

I completely agree with your assessment, having done further research here in the Lounge. The plastic is a dead give away. I think the mind begins to push the date back when you find these things, and careful Lounge source research is invaluable. Thanks, carouselvic. Nice to see the veterans posting.

"Does it have a prominent grain, Dean?"

Well, the photos I posted are pretty good representations of how the grain appears in actual investigation. I would say the grain is apparent, to pronounced, not the slick "vinyl" quality of later sweats, but your dating appears correct. Funny how some serendipity seems to cause one to magnify an already pretty magnificent find. This hat is sweet! Thank you, Baron, for your interest.

You inspire us all with that great find. I'll start beating the street. You must have been giddy when you picked it up and saw that word Playboy.

Hawk, thanks, everyone who finds a vintage deal like this wins!

Pilgrim, your sentiment is greatly appreciated and returned in the same spirit. Thank you.

Jabos, you're so-o-o-o right! You almost can't believe your eyes. You believe your head when you put it on and it fits. Great hat finds and correct sizes are so rare! Thank you.

I've heard of this happening, but I never figured it would happen to me. Went to an antique store in Mason, Michigan, and found this: Royal Stetson Playboy, 7 3/8, excellent condition, and previous owner's name stamped on the sweatband. I think it's a late forties hat. $21!!! I won't go on and on, but I am FINALLY in the vintage fedora caste, three years after joining here. Hooray! Can't believe it!
