50s/60s BRITISH SUIT C50, W45-46

[Baron Kurtz]

I've come across a very rare large sized suit. It's British and custom tailored from the late 1950s or early 1960s. There is nothing to definitively date the suit. There are features from both eras. The first impression i get is that this is a late 50s suit. Roger Crawford is known in mod circles as one of the era tailors.

The fabric is grey, very heavy, and is flawless except for what appears to be the short, faint remains of a small streak of candle wax on the right leg. Should clean out easy enough. I haven't cleaned this suit. Check out the measurements. This is a big-un. The jacket is 2-button notch lapel with 2 rear vents. The trousers have 2 back pockets with scalloped pocket flaps and a watch pocket with a scalloped flap. A single fly-facing pleat and a heavy metal zipper.

Dating British suits...always a problem.

Observe the 'phone number on the label (081 for Ilford, Outer London) and see the following extract from the guide to UK dialling codes (my favourite bedtime reading):

'Number shortage
With growth in second phone lines, direct dial-in (DDI) lines, fax machines and multiple telecoms operators during the 1980s the demand for telephone numbers exceeded the available number ranges. A number of changes were made to the UK numbering plan.

01 for London
The first major change was in May 1990, when the London 01 area code was replaced with 071 and 081. Exchanges in central London used the 071 code with the remaining exchanges using the 081 code and formed a ring around the 071 area. Although this effectively doubled the available numbers it was not the last change for the capital.'

Well, 'Talon: a Romance of Achievement' did dominate my nocturnal reading matter for a long time, but I've now moved onto dialling and postcodes.


Seriously, this shows how difficult it is to date British clothing (suits patricularly) as the general styling and details have changed so little over decades. A point I have made before.

It's still a great suit, whenever it was made. Crawford is still going in Ilford, by the way.

It turned cold today for the first time this winter. I broke out a 6xButton Crombie DB I found at Vinnies for AUD10. Whe I looked at it after a year off and lotsa FL convos with BK and other Brit specialists I was amazed that it is probably 70s but is a total 30s design with the horizontal peaks et al.

I felt even better about finding it.
