Report time. I ended up with a pair of 5.11 Advancet, mainly because I found a pair in my size on fleabay in my size that I won woe £23 ! I have been wearing them for the last two days and the grip on rock, gravel, tarmac and wood is excellent. Slightly less so on grass, but that isn't what they are designed for. The heel is very squared off to give a good grip and spring off on those surfaces but I wouldn't want to wear them up on the hills.
Comfort wise they are excellent, comfortable straight from the box and quite a wide fit. The shank is quite far back in the sole, allowing the toes to flex normally. Ankle support is very good, with a deep cut out to prevent rubbing on your tendons. For a summer boot, all that support has a drawback, they are warm around your ankles. I treated them with Nikwax proofed so we will see if that makes them a bit water resistant, but that wasn't a priority for these boots. Next stop , 5.11 trousers.
