Although Gene Autry and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer have been mentioned seperately, no one has mentioned that it was Autry who made the song a big hit.

Another 1940s novelty Christmas hit was _All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth_ by Spike Jones and his City Slickers.

Haversack.

I had a good laugh when I saw this one pop up again in my email alert! Well, here's my 2006 entry (looks like I've hit this one every year so far.;) )

Interestingly enough, Wal-Mart has a REALLY good selection of Christmas CD's in their Christmas decoration area this year. I was looking through them this weekend, and was quite surprised at the number and QUALITY of selection of good old Christmas recordings there are now available for less than 4 bucks! :)

As Wildroot mentioned last year (or was it year before. (grins)), Bing and the Andrew sisters made quite a few recordings together. Check Wal-Mart out, and I think you'll be as surprised as I was.

Regards! Michaelson

30's 40's christmas

off the cuff here are my 2 favorite period Christmas recordings-
WinterWonderland--I think Weems c. 1934 and Teagarden singing (and playing) Chestnuts Roasting. late 40s ...--
I guess neither are technically Christmas tunes but winter oriented -but it doesnt matter.
Any Christmas Crosby pre 1950 with the Decca house band (John Scott trotter in LA - I think Vic Schoen in NYC) great too. Bessie smith singing At the Christmas Ball certainly deserves a mention.

With Tower Records going out of business I am at a loss, they had some exceptional Christmas Selections in its own gondola display.

Andy Williams is good, especially if you were around to see the Christmas Specials he did. They usually play an hour on Andy on PBS near Christmas time which is worth watching.

Frank Sinatra's Xmas album too.

Bing for White Christmas.

I'll try to grab my stack tomorrow and list some solid info.

Greatest Xmas Instrumental CD

MERRY CHRISTMAS JACKIE GLEASON released in 1956 on the Capitol Records label this studio orchestra using many of the same period sidemen from the Sinatra sessions plus a chorus create one of the great Xmas mood records of all time. :eusa_clap

The chorus does only oh's & ah's with no vocals at all on the entire record, but the created mood is fantastic. This CD is sometimes hard to find & pricey since I believe it is now on a label called Razor & Tie

CD: Billboard 1935-1954 Greatest Christmas Hits

:cheers1:
THis CD from RHino Records (R2 70637 orDPC1 0884) is a real gem for a bargain CD. Although it is only 10 songs these are great. If you see it, you should buy it!

1) "White Christmas" (Live radio) Bing Crosby adds greeting to the troops in WWII. 1942 Heart warming!

2) "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow!" Vaughn Monroe 1945 This thee one, Vaughn's pipes take this to a deep rumble, it is the version at the end of Die Hard 1. It ain't Christmas without this one!

3) "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" 1949 Gene Autry The singing cowboy hits a homerun with this one!

4) "The Christmas Song" 1946 Nat King Cole Perhaps the best version of Mel Torme's greatest holiday song.

5) "All I Want for Christmas is My 2 Front Teeth" 1948 Xmas from a widdle kids point of view. Spike Jones & His City Slickers

6) "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" 1952 Set the wayback machine, sentimental as all get out.

7) "Christmas Island" 1946 The ANdrew Sisters with GuyLombardo and his orchestra (Royal Canadians?) Just dreamy.

8) "Silent Night" 1935 Bing Crosby Play this at night with only the Christmas tree lights on and (Hopefully) watching the snow fall outside, and tell me you didn't get a little choked up.

9) "Here Comes Santa Claus (Down Santa Claus Lane) 1947 Gene Autry Home run number two for Gene.

10) "Santa Baby" 1953 Miss Eartha Kitt Classic Kitt, a great fun poke at the Christmas wish list, pretty sultry. (This one gets stuck in my head a lot!)

Christmas Greetings to the Gang!

Here's another nice one, Christmas with Rosemary Clooney (I go completely totally gooshy over Rosemary Clooney):

What I like to do is put five different Christmas albums on my turntable CD player, and play them spiraling, one song from each album. I can get about 5 hours straight Christmas music that way. Hey, gang, it's coming!
Edit: This isn't exactly 40's but still nostalgic:
