Oh, wow. When I had imagined him as the Hatter this is nowhere near what came to mind. I wonder if the rabbit he's holding is supposed to be the March Hare.
I'm so excited for this film. I'd been a huge Burton fan for most of my life, but Planet of the Apes and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory made me wonder if he'd lost his touch.
Fortunately he redeemed himself splendidly with Sweeney Todd; I have hope that he'll do my favourite books great justice on the big screen! What I know of the casting so far sounds outstanding. I'm especially excited to see Michael Sheen as the Cheshire Cat.
I'm not diggin the depp costume but I think it'll be worth a watch to see what tim burton does with it.
I think because alice is deemed a "children's book" directors shy away from using disturbing imagery, or they go completely overboard just to cater to an adult, faux-artsy audience, I think it's something Burton could balance quite well.
I'm so excited for the release of this movie. I love Tim Burton's films and the pics just released look fantastic. I also love Helena Bonham Carter and the dark style fo Burton's film.
Ive seen early pics of this and I was talking with someone about Alice and why it seems when shes in film, shes always wearing blue (as she is in this one). They couldnt recall her wearing it in the book, but perhaps it was the Disney pinafore that solidified her look from now on.
I dont know, Ive lost ALOT of faith in Tim Burton, because I dont think he does good blockbusters. And the Mad Hatter looks like a glam rock 80s reject from a defunct disco-tech.
I wonder is this based on American Mcgee's Alice, or is it just Burton's own "twist" on the classic, that just has parallels to the game (maybe not quite macabre as the game though).
I got a feeling this is gonna show the dark side to Alice in Wonderland...look at the Mad Hatter...specifically the hands...does that look healthy to you?
I hope this is not another case of the movie not adhering to the story. :eusa_doh: The Mad Hatter just doesn't look like the Tenniel illustrations. Alice looks about right though, she does wear a blue dress in the color plates in my copy of the book. Probably worth seeing, a good date movie.
The movie is actually a sequel to Alice In Wonderland and Through The Looking Glass. It's about Alice running away from the man she is to be engaged to.
From Wikipedia:
Alice, now 17, attends a party at a Victorian estate only to find she is about to be proposed to in front of hundreds of snooty society types. She runs off, following the white rabbit into a hole and ending up in Wonderland, a place she visited 10 years before yet doesn't remember Wonderland was a peaceful kingdom until the Red Queen overthrew her sister. The creatures of Wonderland, ready to revolt, wait for Alice to help them. Alice can't believe the darkness that has fallen over Wonderland.
I have to say that the first time I saw the picture of The Mad Hatter I thought it looked like Gene Wilder in kabuki style makeup.
Wow. This looks awesome.
You can definitely see the modern influences in costumes and makeup, but it looks really creative. Costumers guide has some neat photos. I want her rick rack skirt. http://www.costumersguide.com/cr_alice.shtml
