1960's Makeup and Hair

This is sort of a late 50s/early 60s question because I'm desperate to make the best of a situation I'm losing faith in.

I rolled my hair on medium red and large blue velcro rollers at the top in dry hair with mousse:



I didn't know what to do with the bottom so after blow drying, cooling off, taking rollers out, teasing underside:

(should've teased much more) and smoothing the top down to hide the teased part, I grabbed the blow dryer to make the bottom flip but the barrel on my round brush isn't the right size either. I sprayed liberally but after an hour (camera acted up) the result wasn't worth mention.

So the whole result is a bit deflating each time:


However, I keep experimenting with this just to get the routine down in case I ever learn how to do it correctly, get the right size rollers and the right size round brush barrel if that's what I need.

I can't imagine myself rolling my hair on soda cans and I don't think it's safe to use a modern, high powered blow dryer with soda cans in my hair so what are my roller options?

I knew they were mega grainy. Excuse the size. I'll work on that later today if I get time. Otherwise, "you" can just remove the pictures. Excuse my expression. You'd be less than happy too!

Lillemor, I like your new haicut! in my opinion it suits you nicely!
Even though this is out of the 1960s and a little into the 70s (this pic is from1972) your haircut reminds me of Jane Fonda's.The good thing with that particular haircut is that you can have it curlier in a 1950s style or just leave it as it is when you don't have time to set it.

Have you tried with sponge type rollers or the plastic ones with the snap on covers? I find these give more of a curl/body type curl than the velcro rollers. On my hair the velcro rollers just seem to give a bit of wave or an extra ooomph to my other wise straight hair.

Exactly my experience with the velcro rollers. I have sponge rollers but my hair tangles and breaks when I try to get them out. Am I putting too much tension on? Also the "frames" keep falling off. I haven't seen magnetic rollers around here. It used to be my preferred choice for setting my hair.

I'll have to try a wet set with smaller rollers soon and see if I get a curlier result and like it. I tend to prefer when brushed styles just leave wave and volume or if the curls are left unbrushed except I might smooth the sides back with clips.

hmm....not sure about the hair breaking. I know if i dont pay attention and open them backwards(?) I tend to get tangled a bit. If i do the rolls to tight, I get a groove in the sponge part, kinda like an hr glass figure. I have the same prob with the frames falling off too.

I think the correct way of phrasing it is that I get so much hair tightly tangled on the foam rollers and I end up pulling off more hair than one should expect.

I was talking to my mom about how I'm digging the sixties now, especially the hairstyles, and she told me that she sported the Beehive and the Farah Diba-do when she was young. Empress Farah Diba hasn't been mentioned in this thread, but apparently her hair was very influential.

I really love the 1960s look, especially the French new wave sort of look you mentioned, Cherry Lips. I just love the sort of imagery in the pictures you posted:

I actually did a photoshoot last year with O'Malley, the really talented photographer that often works with Fleur, where we tried to go for that sixties sort of style. Here are a few of the pics he took:

I think I like the chair ones best, as that chair is so cool! I've never done a photoshoot before, but Sean was amazing and made me feel really comfortable. I'd heartily recommend him to anyone in the UK/visiting the UK. And he's done some AMAZING forties style shoots with Fleur.

The hair was sort of mussed up a bit, and the makeup was really heavy on the eyes with false lashes, and pale lips. It looks a lot more natural in the pictures than it did in real life.
