9 minutes to go on an ebay hat, half attentive to put in a late bid and ... the phone rings.

As that was sure to be a lovely guest who is coming over saturday one has to have on's priorities right.
So I let it be at the token starting bid and had an entertaining, witty laugh with her, returning 5 minutes after the auction's ending.

SURPRISE as I had been the only bidder on this (about late fifties/early sixties?) Cavanagh Homburg.

Pristine, dark gray, Cavanagh edge, original box for beer money.
The lady brings luck :eusa_clap so maybe I should find a hat ending when she is here and have her bid ;)

Nice hat Huertecilla and the luck on your side but this should be posted in the " Post new hats here " thread and not in a new thread.
Ah, by the way that is not a Homburg, looks like a Fedora for me!

Thanks. Appologies. Will do next time.

You will probably know better than I.
Looked to me neither fish nor flesh. Thought it did not look like the Fedora as I have that on my mental screen but it does indeed not look like the classic Homburg so if the more knowledgable know it as a Fedora, a Fedora i is. Thanks 2.

Second to Manfred's advice... it saves clutter and improves Google searchability to use an existing thread. You can select the advanced feature when replying to give your reply a personalized title.

If only the information on this site could be better organized...

That is the nature of fora. They are sequential ´organised´and not data bases.
It is the nature of regulars to be annoyed about it.

The thing is that the regulars know hat is in there but that newbies don´t nor what they don´t know.
It is like great inventions; ever so evident áfter the fact.

Bottom line is that some are more annoyed/helpfull than others. I am happy to learn from all.
As to Homburg - Fedora I have no dog in that fight as I have neither base nor motivation to care about which is tagged what and have jotted down another question; about the border of Homburg/Fedora style/brim stiff/soft.

Meanwhile I have acquired what is supposed to be a typical Homburg. No need to wait for the guest as the seller threw me a price way lower than I was planning to offer...
I will put it in the new hats thread which I will search for :D

You don't need to be in doubt. No use for "Homdora" ... it is quite obviously a fedora.

Well, it is not thát elementary my dear Dane. Not all is as it seems to the dominant faction.
Although I could not care less about how it is tagged, the more flamboyant version of the Homburg was only in the US called a Fedora because of Sarah Bernhardt having her fun with the New York puritans.
In Europe this typology was not in use untill after WW2 by which time the Fedora had developed.

By all means drop it into whichever box you feel most comfortable with. The hat remains the same :)

That style is not called "Fedora" because of Sarah Bernard - and yes, the word was in use before WWII. It was probably the male hat in the play "Fedora", that gave name to the male hat - now known as "a fedora". That fact has long ago been established on this site.

Yes, you could indeed care a lot more than "less" about the tagging/designation. If not, you wouldn't write your post ;)

The ladies hat from the original play is - according to photographs - not at all like what we know as a fedora. The hat, the male character wears, looks a lot more like a fedora. The hat is probably called "a fedora" because of the play, called "Fedora".

In addition to the above "Fedora Business", while possessing and having read "Trilby A Novel", it being the London,

Osgood, Mc Ilvaine & Co 1895 English Edition, let it be known that Miss Trilby O'Ferrall never wore an identifiable

hat and certainly never one known as a Trilby. The Hat was introduced, from what I understand, I never having

seen the following, from within the shortly thereafter produced Play of the same name.

Back to FEDORA.

It's funny, but I can't for the life of me see how anyone can say the name fedora was named after any actress. Now, an actress did aid in making the word popular because of being in the play where the name was originated. But it was the play that popularized the name and the actress but helped shine a light thereupon. But in this chicken or egg game, it was the play that came first. Hence, the play made the name, not the actress even as she was a factor.

No one has said it was named after an actress, it was named after her character in a play.

I think the point he's trying to make is that the hat is not named after the character, but after the play itself. Since the actress did not wear a hat of that style but the male lead did, and the hat still ended up with the name "Fedora," it stands to reason that the hat is named after the play (which, yes, is named after the character), but not named specifically after the character herself. Slippery slope, but that makes the most sense.
