1958 Vintage Peacoat

Just received a 1958 vintage peacoat. Size 38 R p2p is 20 3/8 inches. I lucked out. It is in perfect condition. Not a mark or sign of fraying anywhere. The kersey wool looks and feels brand new. The lining is the original and is in excellent condition. I'm wearing the coat right out of the box. I'm sure, after a few days of hanging and a good brushing, it will look even better. The fit is snug, but not tight. I'm wearing a light sweater underneath. Good freedom of movement in the arms. The backside is lying flat and clean.

Looks and fits great! Where does one find a mint 1958 vintage pea coat these days...eBay? Did they have one in size 48?

Nice coat CP. Doesn't look as though you guys have had much winter up there yet. We had a few days down in the 20s, then it was back up to Spring type weather. I am ready for some cold weather. I have a lot of peacoats and leather jackets that need exercise. Looks like you will be exercising a few of yours. You did well on that one. PC.

While we have not had much snow--at least on a consistent basis--the temperatures have been brutal. Just a week ago, the morning low was 9 degrees.

I don't know how much experience you have with Mid West weather but this winter has been extremely mild and 9F is nothing to speak of. In Wisconsin, temperatures below 0F were routine in the North ans certainly not unknown in the South. I've seen -45F up north and -28F in the South. I have not put on a single piece of down gear this winter as my Patagonia Synchilla shelled jacket has been sufficient. No need for Filson /double Mac or heavy Barbour either. I'ts actually a little scary as 40 years ago we used to always have enough snow to run XC races and ice was always thick enough to drive on for Sturgeon spearing. I have not gone for over 10 years as the ice has become too unstable due to warmer weather.-Dick

I've lived in Michigan all my life. A few days ago, the afternoon temperature read 35 degrees and sunny, but the wind chill made it feel as if it were 22. It was brutal. I went out for a run and my tears turned into icicles.

Tomorrow, we are anticipating temps near 50. Then, on Sunday, it will drop to 30. Last winter was mostly dry and warmer than normal. So far, this winter, we've only had two major snow storms. The final weeks of December leading into the New Year saw slightly below normal temperatures.

Lovely peacoat, VT is definitively a good adress to buy peacoats (pricey than Ebay but with a very good quality control and a top customer service).
The winter here in France hasn't started yet... maybe some snow next week ? = my 1966 peacoat is on the starting blocks !

1958 Pea Coat

Just my two cents here. I have a 1958 size 46. It is one of the most beautiful years for US Navy pea coats. The Kersey wool they used at that time was gorgeous. I have bought quite a few pea coats on ebay. You can't beat the prices, and I have gotten excellent coats in my very rare size of 46, and or 46L(Long). I bought one from Vintage Trends and paid a very good buck for a coat that was not as good as the description. Size 48 in old Kersey coats are VERY rare. In three years I have seen 3 or 4, and 1 or 2 of them were in just fair condition. You should be able to find quite a few old Kersey coats in size 38 in excellent condition on eBay. You need to look through the listings everyday if you really want to find some coats. Size 38 is probably the most common size - there are many of them. The prices should be lower then VT also.
