Mr. Harris wears the hat while he's working, and sweats in it. A breeze kicks up dust/dirt and other particulates commonly found on farms, those particulates attach themselves to the damp felt, he puts the hat aside to dry out at the end of the day, and those particulates become embedded in the felt. Repeat this daily for however long he's worn that hat, add the likelihood that he's handled the hat with dirty hands and/or gloves and...well, you've seen the results. Science!Wow...the sweat sure looks like it should be...............er never mind!

As I said, it doesn't just hang in a cube all day watching the clock till quitting time.Now that is the way you age them beautiful hats now through prolonged handling.
