Still Thinking it Over
I have a number of hats that I have found thru the years. And since Art is dealing with a lot of orders at the moment, I am still giving it some thought as to the selection I will make. Will post a image when it is completed.
I have had it on my mind to buy a new hat for sometime now. I had lost my job recently and needed something to pick me up a bit so I gave Art Fawcett a call last week to place an order. After receiving the conformer and returning it, I gave him another call.
While we are chatting away it...
I like the way the brims are set on many of these hats but in reality I find that many of my hats are very stubborn taking any set to the brim. I swear that one of my Panamas must have a wire in laced into the fold over on the perimeter of the brim and simply cannot be reset from its natural...
I found this post from the company I speak of herin is the tale:

D BAR J Hat Company FOR SALE
Letter from David Johnson, Owner:
To my friends, hat wearers, and those that I’ve known for all these long years, greetings.
As many of you know, my health has been deteriorating...
This is a rather long story so I will try to keep it simple. First off he is no longer operating out of a store front but I suppose could be doing business out of his house. I have to admit he was a class operation and walking into his shop rather swept me off my feet.
He had stacks of felt...
That’s a tough call to make as I saw no unusual markings inside the hat nor was the style indicative of a particular time period except to say I don’t think it was newer than 1950. I would guess 1930’s but this is hardly an educated guess. But I have seen many Borsalinos and this hat was...
I have only seen one very old Borsalino in my life. The moment I put that hat in my hand it was obvious that this was a hat of the very highest quality "simply outstanding" and far and away better than the few Borsalinos or any other hat that I presently have in my collection.
I say this only...
I would agree that it just doesn't have the look of an old hat on the inside. But I can tell you that the quality is there as the felt on this hat is much heavier than on lets say a Royal Stetson.
Here are a couple of images of the inside of the hat.
As you can see the inside is quite clean. If I had to nit-pik a bit on this hat I would rather that it had a little bit wider brim. Some hats can be irksome in trying to put just the right bends on a brim and narrow ones can...
Thanks to all of you for your wonderful compliments. I will try and post an image of the inside of the hat tonight. You certainly are a great group of people.
It's rather brief on the sweat band Mallory Fifth Avenue Twenty. And only Mallory Fifth Avenue on the crown. Is it a dud? To me it's a great hat if I do say so. :(
When it comes to hats I don't suppose I am that savvy but I do know a nice hat when I see one. So while I don't pay much mind to the intricate details of the particular style it doesn't interfere with the enjoyment of wearing them.
I found this hat last weekend at the Vintage Textile Show in...
Here is your image. Mind you that I used to be concerned about rings and weaves too but now I find it a bit unnecessary. It is the product of diminishing returns. There is a point one reaches with a Panama that the hat has become beautiful and putting more frosting on the cake may make it a bit...
I will try and do that tomorrow. You are right on this one it is a quality hat. The color is sort of a silver browish and the hat is in average condition great for wearing and not for worring about doing something to screw it up.
I have to admit that there are unforseen dangers in wearing a...
It is difficult to make the transition from what you appreciate and know is great style to what they sell today. I have been in a number touristy hat shops that sell sun hats I can't bring myself to make a purchase as their offerings look so tacky. But don't get me wrong I have bought junk...
For all of you to enjoy here are a few hats from my collection. Most of what I call straws are no brand namers they are just ordinary hats bought in the 40's & 50's for people to keep the sun off there heads. I love wearing them as they are a minimal investment and look absolutely fabulous when...
I am trying to understand what this place is all about. The name of the forum suggests that the topic is hats which I would imagine would include most styles of hats that people would wear. The fact that many of those hats don't fall into the category of Montecristi or a Cuenca is not much of a...
I will try and post some pics tonight to clarify what it is I am speaking of. I lump all sun hats, fiber made cowboy hats (called Shantung Panama's I believe--not sure of spelling) and dress hats that are not specifically Panama's into the catagory of straw hats. So this would include some of...
The most I have paid for a vintage quality straw is $90.00 the rest have been much less. I have found straws at local swap meets, vintage clothing shows and ebay. The variety of styles is beyond belief and many of them unique in their own way. I not suggesting that Panamas are passe only that...
I recently picked up a wide brim Knox straw hat and the more I look at this hat and the other straws I own the less I tend to like Montecristis or Panama's in general. Don't get me wrong I own 3 Montecristis so it is not like I am just being prejudiced because I can't afford to buy one.
I have...
