    Ghost signs

Millersburg, Iowa, according to the site I lifted this from.

    My 1932 House

^^^^^^ It sounds like the house found the right stewards this time. Sometimes it seems that for every house “put back right” there are a dozen that get the original character “improved” clean out of them.

    My 1932 House

And … What sort of work have you done to the place? Interior? Exterior? Grounds? From that one photo it appears that the paint and roof are fresh and that the windows were replaced at some point.

    My 1932 House

^^^^^^ Nice place. And welcome aboard. It’s good to see that your initial post is in tune with the theme of this “community.”

What seperates "golden era" from "midcentury"?

Which I take to mean you have “interesting” furnishings with their own histories. Very little in this place was acquired new. I suppose somebody has to buy that new stuff for there to be used stuff for the rest of us, but so much of the stuff made in recent years just ain’t sturdy enough to...

Vintage posters and other paper ephemera

This little piece of paper was loosely pasted to the inside of an old suitcase. Perhaps our British friends have memories of the Hotel Capri.

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

^^^^^^ I must remain mindful of this unfortunate tendency of mine to engage in a sort of anti-snobbery, which is itself awfully akin to that which it is ostensibly opposed. It can become its own kind of scorekeeping. However, I suffer no compunction whatsoever over my disdain for “slumming.”

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

“Puyallup,” by the way, is pronounced “pew” (like the place you park your rump in church); “Al“ (like Alan’s nickname); “up” (opposite of down). So it’s ‘‘pewALup,“ with the emphasis on the second syllable. You’re welcome.

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

“Puyallup” is among the tougher ones for the recent arrivals; “Issaquah“ (Costco headquarters), “Sedro Wooley,” and “Enumclaw” somewhat less so, but still likely to be stumbled over on early attempts. ”Humptulips,” on the other hand, sounds just like you think it does.

You know you are getting old when:

^^^^^^^^ It was when I was closer to your age, back when the Dead Sea was still sick, that I came to the realization that I wasn’t missing much by not staying current on most popular entertainments. That was true when I still paid more attention to such things, and it’s true now. This is not to...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

^^^^^^ I was born in Madison and spent most of my pre-pubescent years there and still get back that way every now and then, for in-person catch-ups with the remaining friends and relatives who actually know me and to visit the graves of those gone the way of all things. The locals pronounce it...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

And a coupla-three is NOT six. It means more than one but less than four. Kinda. It’s flexible that way.

    What's on your keychain?

As Yogi might have had it, I hesitate to make predictions, especially about the future. Still, it’s not hard to envision a day when keys as we‘ve known them will be mostly obsolete, especially those keys we now use regularly, such as the ones for our personal modes of transport and our...

    Vintage roadside

The Pepsi sign at the bottom of the door suggests this photo dates from no earlier than 1969. (Unlike Coca-Cola, Pepsi has made numerous major changes to its logo over its history.) Was that sign meant to be a kick plate? Is that a screen door? If so, it would open outward, so it wouldn’t...

    What's on your keychain?

I haven’t seen one of those in — golly — decades.

You know you are getting old when:

I’m on so many prescription meds that I take a U-Haul to the pharmacy. If not for the pill sorter thing (my lovely missus bought me a nice handcrafted wooden one) I would all but certainly not take the right meds at the right time. Attribute that in part to the numbers of pills I take, and in...

You know you are getting old when:

^^^^^ In my earlier life the checklist before leaving the motel with my traveling companions was “spectacles, testicles, wallet, watch.” These days you’d add “smartphone“ and drop “watch,” in most cases.

You know you are getting old when:

^^^^ Knowing what a PITA losing one’s keys and/or wallet (debit cards, insurance cards, driver’s license, etc.) can be, I find myself checking the whereabouts of those items before turning in for the night.

You know you are getting old when:

Uh-huh. We’ll have to get you a sturdy stick, with which you can beat back all those wanton hussies throwing themselves at you.
