Now my question is this. What kind of vintage car would be...
You're right. But, real props like Ness' .38 Colt Detective Special or a G-man's Winchester sawed-off shotgun would be great props, but really hard to get them!
At the moment I'm going to collet everything I can get from that period.

For sure he means sweater-vests... ;-)
I also know several pictures and movies where persons are wearing waistcoats and double-breasted suits...

No, the movie follows not history... It is based on Eliot Ness' book "The Untouchables". But there were made many changes... You're right, at that time Ness wasn't married (he lived alone with his parents in the southside of Chicago), the guy in the white suit (Frank Nitti) wasn't killed...
