    Vintage watch repair

Watch repair shops in NYC? Hello, I'm not terribly new to the forum, but don't post much. I'm not sure where else to ask this question, but it seems if anyone would know, it might be someone on this board! Does anyone know of a reputable watch repair shop or person in NYC? I'm looking...

    Girdles, Corsets, and Underpinnings

"nothing even approximated the V-shaped torso of the 50s models in my magazines. Actual corsets came closest, but they still weren't quite right" Corsets differ greatly in shape. For me, the most effective method of achieving this shape is with an underbust corset with a conical ribcage, as...

How does a girl keep warm?

    Aww, why thank you!

    Girdles, Corsets, and Underpinnings

Those are very cute! I have bought a pair from her in the past and they are very well made, though I think they had the fetishist in mind (no cotton gusset--how very... vintage!). For everyday wear though, I'd recommend the Bali "Skimp Skamp" brief--- it's generous enough to cover a garterbelt...

    All vintage, all the time?

Actually, I do know a few fellows like this & your model fits everyone of them to a tee, right down to being svelte enough to fit into deadstock.

How does a girl keep warm?

I think I have the opposite dilemma! I love dressing for the winter, but am frequently at a loss as to what to wear during the summer months. My everyday winter wardrobe consists of mid to heavy weight wool skirts & blouses worn with a sweater or cardigan. You really can't beat natural fibers...

Have you ever weighted your slips?

Interesting notion! I've actually weighted the hem of some skirts in the past after reading an article about such practices. I didn't use any sort of traditional weight, but instead did just as the article had suggested and drilled holes into pennies and tacked them onto the hem. (this is a sort...

    Cute Vintage-y Shoes

Ooh! I just bought those seychelles oxfords (third up from the bottom). They arrived last week. I've received profuse compliments on them and they're quite cute. Just to note, Seychelles makes shockingly comfortable heels!

    HELP HELP! Bobby pins/Kirby grips

I think I know the curved bobby pin that you speak of Jitterbugdoll. I use them as well and they actually stay in my stick straight asiatic hair. They're made my a brand called 'Scunci' and are called "comfort curved" or something to that effect.

    Girdles, Corsets, and Underpinnings

Placing an order with SIL seems to put you on their mailing list for life! Instead of spending $10 for the catalogue, just buy some RHT's and you're set. Currently the catalogue does have a couple items that are not yet up on their site, but this seems to be a first.

    Gramophones, Phonographs, Victrolas....

My fiance and I casually collect 78 rpm records. He has a Victor Orthophonic Victrola (I've never heard records sound better on anything else!) but usually play our records on a smaller electric (but still antique!) record player due to it's lighter tone arm (thereby reducing wear to the...

    Girdles, Corsets, and Underpinnings

I live in Brooklyn, Flatbush to be more precise, and I commute to Queens. Distance-wise its not so bad, but with the way the trains work, it makes my commute longer that it ought to be. Whereabouts are you? I guess I should be counting my lucky stars, lots of folks have commutes that are...

    Girdles, Corsets, and Underpinnings

I also have a very long commute, with all the walking and waiting around for trains and buses that we do here in nyc, woolens definitely make a huge difference! The Vermont Country Store carries a nice merino wool slip. I also like the "Medima" brand angora-wool long underwear that can be...

    Girdles, Corsets, and Underpinnings

Hey, don't laugh- woolen snuggies over your girdle makes wearing vintage styles all year round much more tolerable! :)

    Spats!

I have a pair of vintage ladies spats (well, they'd probably be more accurately described as "gaiters") that are about 8" tall, the label inside is marked "Watertite -rain proof". I wear them in the winter, over a pair of moderately heeled oxfords. I always get complements when I wear them! I...

    Footwear for Winter

I still see ladies overshoes for sale in shoe repair shops here in NYC. They're not ornamental or particularlly attractive in any way, just functional rubber booties that slip on over your shoes. My mother has a pair, though I've never seen her wear them. This season many designers have come...

    what katie did

Ditto to the Low Tech billing process Ms Bella Hell, I had the same exact issue with them. I was excited by the "Matrisse" line, very cute and authentic looking... but I was a touch dissapointed with the quality of the Matrisse garterbelt, not quite worth the price in my opinion.

    Cute Vintage-y Shoes

I've ordered from that company and I cannot recommend them due to their customer service. A couple years ago they were owned by someone else (the company was then called "lorians") and was recommended to me by several people. When I ordered from them under their new owner, I was a little wary...

    Diamonds aren't (always) a girl's best friend...

Diamonds are admittedly lovely... but once I learned of the years of greed and human tragedy that surrounds the diamond trade, the idea of purchasing one seems completely disgusting. All that said- my fiance insisted on giving me a diamond engagement ring. However, he presented me with an...
