LL
They don't have a shop fully up & running as yet, the current place is just a showroom but jackets can be seen, tried-on and bought or ordered. Custom jackets (extra body and sleeve length if needed) can be made at no extra cost. I was told that LL is moving into the downstairs floor once...
B-1 Colour picture
Judging by the wear on the collar, character of the leather and the fact that the picture is in colour, I think its perfectly possible that the photograph was staged for the book cover using vintage clothing, a bit of tweaking in Photoshop would easily make the picture look...
McQueen Jacket
Interesting thread idea rgraham.
Re: the jacket; I got a book some years ago called 40 Summers ago by Rin Tanaka and Sean Kelly and it stated there that the USA 1964 ISDT team all wore Barbour; full story here:
There is also a good McQueen website here with lots of...
Found the attached images in an old folder on my PC, the first advert is from Jan 1931 and the boots were on ebay a few years back, I think the boots may date to earlier than the ad as the construction is simpler, however, I could be wrong. The 2nd ad is from 1944 the boots were also on ebay a...
Radley
I haven't heard of the Radley "Service" label before, now I'm really intrigued!
I have seen a label with the words "United Services" on it before now, on mens short casual leather jackets which were almost certainly 50's era, probably early - mid, any connection I wonder?
Radley
Hi Alan,
without seeing the jacket I can't be sure but due to its age I would guess it is by Elizabeth Radley whose range later became Highwayman. There is no connection between Radley Handbags & Elizabeth Radley/Highwayman as Highwayman (which was incidentally owned by D Lewis)...
Radley jacket
Alan, is there any possibility that you could post a picture of the Radley jacket? -they made some nice pieces in the late 50s / early 60s, I have a couple of their items myself.
WW2 USAAF flying gear photo's

DGL
[COLOR="Yellow"][COLOR="Orange"][COLOR="Orange"]
[COLOR="Yellow"]Been digging for info on DGL at Companies House and they came up with two possibilities:
DGL London: (Company No. 173338) 1921 -?
and
DGL LTD: (Company No. 247799) 1929 -?
Both companies were dissolved before 1976...
GTH
GTH could be G T Hawkins, the famous footwear company of Northampton (now sadly closed).
G T Hawkins exists only as a brand now, Italian owned and with no connection to Northampton or the UK, I think the motorcycle boots on the Silverman's site may be made by them. The other footwear made...
Early Belstaffs
Hi CP,
Re: the Lightning zippers on your early Belstaff jackets, are they the same shape as the ones commonly found on Irvin jackets but completely flat (instead of curved)? -if so they probably date the jackets to late 50s/early 60s, these zippers can sometimes be seen on UK...
ISDT JACKETS
Just spotted this thread and have a couple of questions for Mr Eardley.
Do you know when Belstaff first introduced their wax jackets? -checking all of the motorcycle magazines I have (a hell of a lot), the first advert I can find for a wax jacket in the WW2 Submarine style is...
James Halstead
[QUOTE=Alan Eardley]And here he is...better late than never. At Belstaff we used to have a sophisticated waxproofing development section (his name was George Barnish) who used to spend hours experimenting with different compounds. He would then spend even more hours telling us...
Battle of Britain move/Newey
Yes, the Battle of Britain movie was released in 1969 but probably took a couple of years to make & edit.
Re: Newey;
I think it quite possible that a trimmings company like Newey could well have sold their own zips, even if sourced at a manufacturer other than...
Lightning Zips
Whilst perusing a fascinating website dedicated to the History of Kynoch Works (Part 1), I noticed the following quote:
1926 A new company is formed: Lightning Fasteners Ltd., to handle the zip fastener business. Significant investment is made in sporting ammunition facilities...
'W' ZIPS
Most collectors I have spoken to have presumed they are civilian, but the few I examined had standard "later war" RAF zips e.g. N's and Lightnings. (Originally posted by Night & the City).
Hi Night & the City, spotted your post today and the W zip, I think this was made by...
D Lewis had a substantial factory in the East End which was in existence pre-war, production continued there during WW2 although it is unclear exactly what was made there, presumably contracted goods for the government and private purchase (one would assume there were no civilian airmen flying...
