Picked up a nice brown Borsalino at an auction yesterday. I'm not sure I can date it accurately. The estate was from a 96 year-old whose husband died in 1956. She kept most of his things, including this hat.
It's a thin ribbon, wide brim (2.5") with a 4.5" crown.
Inside, there is a coat...
The idea is NOT to "compete" with the FL. There's no competition to the active community here. The idea is to put the majority of the information accessible from page one of the website, make it indexable by Google (the FL doesn't start showing up until page 5 of a Google search for "vintage...
After a little hiatus from checking the message board here at the FL, I've now got some of my own time back!
Some time ago, I wanted to start compiling information on the various aspects of vintage suits that date the piece, or that someone can use to take to a tailor. There's seems to be a...
New Blue DB 3pc
Just picked this up last night:

Finally! I finally got a blue pinstripe DB suit. Now I can get rid of some of my other "almost what I wanted, but I guess it'll work" suits. Should fit perfectly.

Got these recently at the thrift store:
I think the first two are '30s-ish because they're short, very lightweight compared to ties I know are from the '50s and '60s, and are widely tapered like my '30s/'40s Wembley. I'm not sure what to make of the gold one, though. The tail on...
It's been a while since I've posted... Been busy with school and working on the novel. And had to cut back on the vintage purchases for a while. :)
My new favorite suit is a 3pc navy BB from, I think the early '50s (it's got the '49-'69 label). I just got in the mail a box of NOS 2"...
I picked up a set of detachable collars on the bay a while back and while I've got a shirt at the seamstress to have the collar taken off, I thought I'd clean the collars, which are probably early '30s numbers.
I've searched all through the forum here and found varying advice on taking care...
Nice linen suit, but too rich for my blood
Here's why I don't own a 30s linen suit:

I've been saving the eBay pics of suits I like (this one particularly), but since I can't justify...
I've been wanting to post some stills from silent movies and old TCM movies for a while here, (for the purposes of example/discussion, etc...) but not terribly sure how to approach this technically.
I can record the movies onto my DVR, so I can pause them, etc... to get a good shot of the...
Going Eliot Ness
This green gab suit was made by a uniform company, so I've decided that it looks like something a detective might have worn:
Mid to late fourties suit. Probably '30s (?) Wembley tie. Late '40s, early '50s Dobbs straw fedora. Wore it to work and nobody knew it was...
The tips of the collars probably came down at least that far, but the back part of the collar looked to be about a normal height. No room for three buttons up front. :)
I wear my clip-on suspenders with my jeans all the time. We live in the country and this month I'm re-roofing our house, so the suspenders, when I'm working, are essential.
I have a pair of jeans that have, ahemm, shrunk on me, and they are terribly uncomfortable to work in. If I wear a belt...
I was in Kohl's the other day and picked up a nice herringbone white dress shirt at %60 off (gotta love Kohl's) and noticed a large number of Arrow shirts with collars that were significantly pointier than the other shirts there. I compared collars and the difference was noticeable. I looked in...
Speaking of starched...collars
I'm seriously considering purchasing a couple detachable collars from Amazon Dry Goods. Then I'll need shirts to go with them, of course. I've been looking around at the various shirts made for detachable collars and, aside from being fairly expensive, as white...
I'm writing a scene for my novel-in-progress, which is a literary/historical set in the mid-to-late twenties in east-central Arkansas. I was thinking of having one of my characters show up in a seersucker suit with a striped red tie, red pocket square, and spectators (and a boater, of course). I...
I'm pretty sure (though not positive) of the '30s date on the orange tie because I've seen that pattern (and length) in period advertisements. The small end has a definite flare, too. The wide end is several inches below the short end and the knot is really tighter than it should be with the...
I dropped by the thrift store today and picked up a couple ties that I'd seen before, but decided to pass on. I changed my mind and bought 6 or 7. :)
We've been having a conversation on the four-in-hand knot over in the Suits forum and that got me to thinking about ties. These ties are all...
Did anyone here pick this up?
Did anyone on the FL win this nice suit?:
MENS DEPRESSION ERA SUIT COAT PANTS TIE CARL COATS SUIT
Nice price, nice-looking suit. Size was really small, so I wasn't going to bid, but I really like this look.
