    Old gas stations

Our public library offers a free notary service. That's where we go when we need something notarized. You do need to ask ahead of time to find out when the notaries (I think there are two at our branch) will be working.

    Ham radio

I've recently put up an HF antenna and have been getting back on the air a bit after a number of years. I thought that I'd bump this to see what other hams there are in the Lounge these days. 73, in/y

    Old gas stations

As seen in Flemington, NJ last winter The lettering looks to be Mobil but the design of the building I believe is Esso. Perhaps converted during the Exxon-Mobil merge. You rarely see these still wearing their porcelain skins these days.

    Old gas stations

Here's another survivor that's about 3/4 of a mile from where I grew up in Pennsylvania. It was a Texaco station in the 60' & 70's (and probably a little into the 80's). The owner had set aside part of the office as a candy store (old school with penny candy with a class display case) which I...

Farewell My Lovely... Hello my lovely hat.

Farewell My Lovely is certainly on my short list of favorite films. I was already into things vintage by the time it came out when I was in high school. It was the first film that I actually paid to see a second time in the theater as a first run film. I understand that disputes over the...

The Passing Away of John Erickson, Fellow Lounger and Friend to Many.

I too am saddened to hear of John's passing. He was (and still is) on my short list of Loungers I hope to meet in person someday.

    War Of The Worlds Hoax

Just like me dad's family in Peoria, Illinois (he was 12 at the time). It was a non-event for him. He's told me that he didn't even hear much about the broadcast and the hub-bub in the days that followed.

    War Of The Worlds Hoax

Happy 75th As I work less that 20 minutes from Grovers Mill, I went there during lunch. Neither scorched earth nor cylinders were observed... there really isn't much to speak of in the area even today. A park in the area has a monument to the broadcast so I'm sending everyone at the Lounge...

Choosing the Correct Hat for your Body Type

I posted a 1950's hat selection guide here a while back. You may find it useful too. http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?40817-Selecting-The-Right-Hat-1950-Style&highlight=

    Skills For "Living The Era"

Having been into ham radio over the years (currently mostly inactive while raising kids), there is potential for dealing with electrical safety frequently, especially when using tubes instead of transistors. Transmitter high voltages can be in the thousands of volts. This stuff is lethal...

Do You Know Any Living WWII Veterans?

My dad. Still living on his own at 86 (mom passed away some years ago). A Pacific Navy vet, was first on a subchaser around New Guinea. Later after the subchaser ran aground after a nighttime skirmish with a (probably) sub, stationed on a sea going tug around Enewetak in the Marshall Islands...

Role of Brown Suits in the Golden Age

Considering the number of brown (or related) color vintage ties I've amassed over the years, brown suits couldn't have been all that rare.

    Halloween Costumes

Always wanted to do this... get two sets of matching clothes, stitch them together along one side (both pants & shirt), stuff one set of clothes, adding a head, put on the other set of clothes myself and go as recently reunited Siamese twins.

    Ricky Jackets

I guess that Dry Bones does not have an international web/purchasing presence (I could only find their Japanese language site). Are there retailers that carry their stuff or is ebay the way to go? This number from them is certainly appealing:

    Thanks for the leads.

    Ricky Jackets

Who's making repro Ricky Jackets these days? I'm looking to buy a repro Ricky Jacket, ideally a zippered front two-tone or fleck gabardine (wishful thinking I'll bet). Being on the large side, vintage jackets are scarce and costly and I'm looking for one that I can wear often without...

National Archives recordings stolen, sold on ebay

How many suits do you own?

Being a large fellow both in hats (7 5/8) and suits (50R U.S.), finding vintage things my size is challenging (a big understatement!:frusty:). At least vintage ties fit me! 1 vintage DB suit 0 vintage fedoras 3 modern fedoras (2 Optimos and a Biltmore) 5 modern suits, 4 DB, 1 three button...

    Shaving travel set-up

The family is heading on an extended 2 week vacation this summer. I was wondering if there were any other/new suggestions for a travel shaving brush. Are the turnback type (operating like a lipstick holder) of travel brushes better?

DEATHS ; Notable Passings; The Thread to Pay Last Respects

I grew up in the Philadelphia area with Dick Clark & Bandstand. Back in the shows early days it broadcast out of Philadelphia, live, 5 days a week in the afternoon. We in Philadelphia got an extra half hour of the show before it went out on the network. My mom always said that Bandstand was the...
