Rather than starting a new thread, I thought I'd revive this one.
I too want a hat like Mitchum's in Farewell My Lovely and wanted to see if anyone has any newer info/ideas about this hat, especially the color of the band.
I'll likely have to have one made as it's darn tough to find vintage...

I remember seeing photos of Harry Truman & George W. Bush used as examples someplace on the Lounge but haven't been able to find 'em. They both had an arm raised (probably waving to a crowd) and made for an excellent comparison.
Can anyone point me to those photos again?
I remember my mom telling me when I was leaning to drive (on a manual shift '63 VW) that her father always told her to "drive with the engine" when she was learning to drive (on a '37 Chevy). My mom explained this to me as basically using engine breaking whenever possible and only using the...
The last maker of manual typewriters, Godrej and Boyce in India, had ceased production.

I remember the Sonoco blended pumps well, I think the top grade was 260 (and distinctly remember 190 being the lowest grade).
Anyone know what the octane rating was for Sonoco 260?
I dabbled with hats in high school, an open road type that my dad had purchased in Dallas more as a souvenir (he never wore it that I remember). Also a 60's style fedora that was also dad's though it didn't take at that time.
After 2 years at the local community college (and not waring hats)...
I will often say "anywho" instead of anyway as in "Anyway, we still need to go to the store." Granted the "Anyway" is not really need either.
I never really picked up on this habit of mine until recently when I noticed that my 13 year-old son (who got his own cell phone a few months ago) uses...
It looks like you can get the Brocktons online at the main Stacy Adams website.
Thanks for the SA comments Guttersnipe. You're certainly right the look is great, the price is good. With a little care it sounds like they'll hold up OK as well.
I've always liked the look of SA shoes, especially the Madison. However I have also had concerns about the durability/longevity of their shoes (and have seen a couple of similar comments around the FL).
I ran into a new (at least to me) line of SA shoes today, Brockton Originals. They look...
One mystery that I have always found haunting since I first heard about it is the disappearance of 10 year old Beverly Potts in 1951.
Beverly went (with a friend) to an outdoor community show attended by a large number of people on a Friday night at a park that was a few blocks from her home...
I'm a librarian at the county community college & wear at least a shirt with a nice pair of trousers and tie to work everyday (a suit maybe once a week, or more if I feel like it).
I wear nothing but cuff links every day. The only exception is on the hottest days of the summer when I wear a...
Thanks for the heads up.
We've been talking about making a family trip to the museum as it's been a while since we were last there.
Now I have an added reason for going.
Cheers!
Dead Last: The Public Memory of Warren G. Harding's Scandalous Past by Phillip Payne.
The book looks at the things that are taken as "fact" today and looks at the where these ideas came from and what is known from the actual historical records.
Often there are conflicting "facts".
Was...
Just did a quick look on the 'bay and found that Tommy Hilfiger made/makes? something that might work for converting to an all stars bowtie. Listing is here.
It may be more than what you want to pay for a tie that you'll be converting but they are out there.
Perhaps you could have one made for you. I ran into a place out there in the cyberworld called the Cordial Churchman (http://thecordialchurchman.bigcartel.com/) . They will make you a bowtie for out of an old straight tie (I'm sure there's some cheap tie out there with a pattern that would work...
