Sooo..has anyone been able to figure out how to sew an unreeded sweatband? Is there a way to do it by hand? It doesn't look too complicated given some patience and ingenuity but it looks like the stitch goes in between the felt? I can't seem to see stitching under the headband.
Thanks for all the replies everyone! I got in touch with Art and he doesn't currently stock something like the dark navy I posted but I'm still looking to get a hat after I research a bit more from all the suggestions posted, either from Art or who knows where it'll take me...
Couple of questions, perhaps I can find an answer to cover all 3.
Who makes good quality affordable ~$300 hats?
With a color like this gray/blue Stetson?
And has a tapered crown like Optimo's?
I'm also considering Art's hats but he doesn't currently stock a gray/blue Off the Rack and his hats...
@AbbaDatDeHat @jdbenson @belfastboy Thats a Perceval L10 and the blade is 95mm. You should be able to get in touch with them to get something made for you.
I never understood why they would have knives without a liner lock (or why anyone would prefer to own one without) until reading about...
Ambidextrous. Nail notches were never a selling point for me, especially on stiff or spring loaded blades. Same with the modern tactical style knives. I also don't see the need for a drop point blade, the sheepsfoot is easier to sharpen and more useful for day to day. Looks more gentlemanly too...
Thanks @Michael R.! I went and looked at it today and it is indeed a Resistol with a cowboy on a horse. Not sure the best place to advertise this but it's too small for me at size 7 but is in great condition if anyone is interested!
It really is as clean as the pictures convey.
Does the cowboy, horse liner indicate a western weight or western hat?
When did Stetson change to the logo of a cowboy on a bucking horse? I can't seem to find pictures of that to compare.
I have my eye on a hat with a narrow ribbon, cattleman crease and bound edge. The logo is gold printed...
Looking for something that will wear for a while and not need any work.
Preferably something 30s-50s with a wide brim with a nice subtle taper to the crown and a wide-ish ribbon. Ideally, it would be unreeded and moldable and not a cemented shape that needs steam to mold but not deal breakers...
Thats a nice looking hat @Danbar99! Is that the Finga? May I ask how much the hat runs and how the ordering process was?
I'm looking for a wide (3") brim center dent Panama but not really a fan of bleached toquilla. Would any loungers on this thread have suggestions? This Delmonico Agua is...
I poked around their website numerous times trying to find pricing but never was able to. Thanks!
drmaxtejada: I wanted to get a ballpark figure to decide whether I should pick up a $100 job or just go all in for an Optimo. I'm really smitten by their Panamas though.
Thank you! I may migrate my inquiries over to the Panama thread to get more eyes but did find a few reviews about the Pantropic being a little floppy in the brim. I'm now looking at the Jaxons since they seem to be blocked nicer and look equal in quality.
Anyone know the range their Panamas run? I could've sworn last time I checked one was $350 but seeing the felt hats in the $5-650 range is disheartening. I had hoped to visit Chicago to pick one out but that'll be out of my budget.
That sort of looks like a one piece, not a 6 panel like someone else mentioned. Monsivais calls it a one piece crown flat cap but the sides and back look a little different which looks like just a style difference on the part of the hat maker.
Thanks! It did a decent job but I'm guessing the...
Feather care? I've got a hat with a pheasant feather threaded through the brim but a part of it looks like bed head. Is there any way to smooth it out aside from replacing it?
Hat care question:
Are those long handled narrow curved hat brushes crucial or would a rectangular one work as long as its horse hair?
I'm looking to get a brush for my coats as well and would prefer something that could double duty.
Also, the felt in my crown is really soft and a little...
@buler Wow, I hadn't seen that thread yet but its a treasure trove! Thanks for the uploading it all. Looks like Nokabout was a mid/low priced option. Still
@KarlCrow I'll give that a shot as I'm hesitant to touch it with sandpaper. I read on here somewhere about using cylindrical glass with a...
Thanks all for the helpful replies!
I'll likely be hanging on to it for now as it's been growing on me the longer it sits here.
There's not too much info on the Mallory's floating around. Looks like mine ranges anywhere from 1934 - 1946 based on the United Hatters Stamp and the 1823 liner...
