For anyone that cares I can report that Watson's Hat Shop does excellent work. Just received my hat back yesterday after a reblock and brim trim to get my western cowboy hat closer to an Open Road. It's not 100% an Open Road still as the brim is a little wide (3 5/8 at my direction. It should...
My hat didn't need cleaning, so no. But the price does include a nice hat box, mine was pretty old and beat up. I didn't find many hatters that offer restoration services let alone remaking hats into something else so I'm happy. Hopefully I'll be happy with the final result. He quoted me 2-3...
Nope never heard of the place, but thanks for the suggestion, it was very thoughtful. I ended up sending one of my older hats to Watson's Hat Shop in Cave Creek AZ. He's the guy who made the hats for the Netflix series Godless and evidently he does a lot of restoration/reblock work on older...
Unfortunately I have no local hatter. I've had plenty of custom hats made for me (Penman, Steve Delk, Jaxonbilt), but still have yet to get that "ah ha" feeling of finding a hat with dimensions that suit me perfectly.
On fedoras the crowns are too tall and the brim is too narrow (Raiders and...
So standard sizes look different on different size frames. Funny, I never considered that until my quest began for an Open Road. A western cowboy hat is too much material for my noggin, but I like the western vibe. Maybe the Corrections hat above might be a better suited.
Thanks Hurricane, I sent you a PM. Deadlyhandsome, I'm not sure of the dimensions because as I said the one Open Road I did order was a disaster, but probably a wider brim for sure and maybe a taller crown.
I’m a 7-7/8, but also long oval in shape so custom is the only way I’ve been able to find anything that fits.
I had an Open Road made a while back but the dimensions weren’t adjusted for my size and the hat ended up looking ridiculous, like a Porkpie on my head.
I’d like to get a custom Open Road made for my huge noggin. Specs such as crown height and brim width would need to be adjusted to look appropriate for my head size, so I need to go custom. I’d like to work with someone who has experience with this particular style style, so if you have a...
"My question would be: have you noticed an improvement or decline in the hats you have purchased with the "new" people apparently making them?" AndyKev, the more I think about it the more I believe the problems started when he brought in his new partner. I'm not sure if the partner had previous...
Thanks J Williams. I like what you wrote here: "I would judge him more based on how the mistake is corrected than the mistake itself." And thanks too Anykev, but just to be clear this hat is actually more like my fifth from him.
I happen to know he brought in a partner and expanded his...
I've been giving the same hat maker my business now for about 15 years. Initially he sent me a little gizmo to measure not only the size of my head but also the shape so that the hat would be as close to custom as one can get these days. The first hat I received from him was perfect in terms of...
Today I noticed a gentleman wearing a very nice Open Road. I complimented him on it, and asked where he bought it and it turned out he had it custom made from one of my favorites makers----- Jaxonbilt Hat Co in Salmon ID. Usually I'm the one wearing a Jaxonbilt, but today it was my turn to react...
Anyone watching "Godless" on Netflix? Some of the western hats I've noticed on the show look great, and out of the ordinary for regular westerns. One of the female leads wears a great hat.
