Thank you for the compliments :) I have been wearing the hat a lot.
I like it better than some that I've bought.lol
Dinerman, can you post some pics of your hat with the brim cut?
Thanks Douglas. My dad said he didn't wear the side cap much, so it is in great condition. The officers' hat is in good condition as well except for some wear on the sweat band. Too bad he didn't get to keep his flying helmet.:(
The RCAF look very much like the RAAF caps. But that is to be...
finally got some pictures.
These are from Royal Canadian Air Force, WWII. The first one was issued to my dad when he was enlisted as an aircraftman. The second he received when he was promoted to an officer.
Great pictures. My Dad was in the RCAF and flew in a bomber. I've seen pictures of him with a similar flight helmet. He has his officers hat which I hope to inherit some day.
I am no expert on wool hats but anything wool will shrink if heated when wet.
I would think it is like a wool sweater and should be left in a cool place to dry.
I used a cloth tape measure and chalkboard chalk to mark the brim. Then used upholstery sissors to cut it. After cutting the brim I used very fine automotive sandpaper to round the cut edge. You just have to cut slowly to ensure a nice continuous curve.
Thinking about curving the back up...
Well I took the plunge and cut the brim from 4" to 2 3/4". I like the ribbon that is on it but thinking about trying a wider one just to see what it will look like.
By the way, it was a Stetson cowboy hat made in Calgary, Canada around 1980.
Now it is........?? Whatever it is I like it better.
I only have three hats (not counting baseball caps). Hope to have more but I have limited storage space. There seems to be many of you that have 30+ hats. I am wondering how you store them in order to keep them from losing their shape and collecting dust, moths etc.
Very nice travel log. :eusa_clap Reminds me of a TV show called "The Thirsty Traveler" except this is about hats not alcoholic beverages.
Hmmm not a bad idea for a new series.
