There are probably hundreds of explorers, adventurers, etc. that were active in the first half of the 20th century. Some of my favorites are:
- Theodore Roosevelt, hunter, explorer, soldier, president.

- Frank Buck, adventurer, procurer of wild animals
- Jimmy Angel...
To take Swinggal's comments a bit further, some classic stories don't translate well in a modern setting. For example, Sherlock Holmes stories work best set in Victorian England.
