Yep, it's a Miller/Biltmore, I'm sure it's designed to be an OR knockoff. Back in the 60's and/or 70's the Texas DPS hat was a Stetson that looked identical to the OR except it had a raw brim and they wore 'em curled up on the sides rancher style. A gal gave me one that had belonged to her ex...
Thanks monbla. I'm not the most creative thinker in the room and having trouble visualizing it! I've seen centerdents in various configurations but don't think I've seen one with pinches all the way back other than the OR/Cattleman type crease. I'll look around on the 'Net and see what I can...
This is how it came to me:

With new ribbon, original crease:

Tightened up the crease a bit and added a little curl to the brim:

I still think it looks a little boxy on me. I think I'd like to try something with a little taper in the crown.
I didn't realize how good he was until he was gone. I lived in Ft Worth in the 60's through early 80's and didn't pay a lot of attention to him and Jimmy back then. I was doing the C&W thing then. Later I got interested in blues and started trying to learn some of his songs and licks, the guy...
Thanks for the replies guys, the pics help. Decent used hats are hard to come by in 7 5/8 or 7 3/4, at least within my limited budget. I'd like to have gray and tan-medium brown knock around winter hats and I'm thinking I might convert a western to something less cowboy but not quite fedora...
Hey conversion folks! Have you ever seen a "rancher" style hat with eyelets reshaped into a teardrop with a ribbon band replacing the leather strap? Did the look work?
Thanks,
Jim
Eeeeeek!!! Rick....that feather band is scary! But what a great conversion project! I'm on the hunt for something similar in tan/light brown but 7 5/8 LO or 7 3/4 is hard to find. Good luck with it and post pics!
Thanks, I got lucky finding the ribbon black/brown ribbon, thanks to a fellow lounger. Todd's Costumes sells it online, one color, 1 1/2" only, 100% Rayon. It's evidently the color used on accurate Indy Jones repros and it matches the edging on mine really close. It was easy to work with, I...
This Biltmore came with a leather band
Here's the ribbon I made:
Color and lighting is terrible but here it is on:
I'm not crazy about the bash, seems a bit boxy. Any experienced suggestions on how to adjust the bash to "streamline" it a little?
Thanks,
Jim
That he does! Hag is one of my all time favorite C&W guys. He did a song titled "I Wear My Own Kind Of Hat" written by Red Lane who played guitar with Merle at one time.
The Keith Richards line caught my attention, then I saw Richards, Lennon, Dylan, and Cash in the same conversation....quite a mix!! I saw Cash in TX a few years before he passed and his command of the performance was amazing. On another note both Ronnie Wood and Tom Petty have new CDs out and...
Slim (Bill Homans) has an interesting story!
"Slim has been a truck driver, forklift operator, sawmiller (where he lost part of his finger), firewood salesman, collection agent, and even officiated funerals. At times he got by as a small time criminal. At one point he was forced to flee...
