I have no idea how to include a link to another site, but if you Google "The Historic Flying Clothing Company", go to their online shop, then click on categories, then Flying Jackets & Suits WW2 RAF (sorry, maybe someone could insert a link?), there is a very interesting "Irvin Flying Coat Full...
Just to add my thanks to Andrew for taking the time to post the photos of such a magnificent collection of Irvins. The book will undoubtedly be worth the wait.
Beautiful jacket, and I was particularly impressed with how authentic the colour of the hood is. I have an original C.C. jacket which I am now too scared to wear due to researching its history, but when I did wear it, I would always have the hood rolled over so that it looked like a bulkier...
Ok guys apologies to all concerned, it was just a joke that started with my saying I loved Andrew's jacket so much I would sell my mother in law to buy it, even pretending that she was up on ebay at the moment. Troglodyte jokingly asked for pics, and I attempted a humorous reply, describing my...
Sorry Andrew, that was my attempt at an Original Irvin inspired mother in law joke. If you read the last couple of posts from myself and Troglodyte you will get the context. I promise to stay on topic in future.
Dear Troglodyte, sorry no pics are available since I discovered the delete function on my camera. The item in question is a late war variant probably made by the Missing Links company as part of their A.M. Contract No.666. Original and unrestored, the leather has lost its original smooth coating...
Unlike Soren I am a complete Irvin tart - love them all, wired or not, hooded or not, single or multi panel, original condition or patched up basket case. But, there are Irvins and IRVINS, and that jacket is just ridiculously beautiful. I would happily sell my mother in law for that jacket, and...
Soren sized original?
I noticed an (apparently) exceptionally large electrically wired original up for auction on ebay which may be of interest to Soren or other loungers. Not in pristine original condition, and not cheap, but unusual and worth a look maybe?
Beautiful jackets and, as always, highly detailed and helpful descriptions including the size of chest the jackets will fit. Considering how few original Irvins are auctioned on ebay it seems to me that a high percentage are listed without this critical detail. Usually a question and answer...
Dear Irvinsuit,
I appreciate that the jacket is meant to be an interpretation rather than an exact copy, but the thing is being promoted on other websites with a history which is as far from the truth as the jacket is from the original. Apparently these jackets were worn by "Coastal Commanders"...
Just spotted a new repro Irvin which should appeal to those who have been looking for a Coastal Command replica. I say it should, but suspect it won't. Just Google "LL-CC Coastal Command" to see Nigel Cabourn's new jacket, made by Aero who surely should know better. Still a snip at just over...
Sorry to keep hogging the thread, but I thought I would just add that post war the jacket has had an eventful life, having been bought from a lady in England by a Canadian dealer before being bought and re imported by Mr Pringle of Oldnautibits and finally bought by myself. Thanks again to...
Just an aside, but if you click on the operations flown you should see that on Op Nico 1C the dropzone was found by Gee. As this is my surname I was excited by the possibility that a distant relation of mine might have had a hand in inventing a navigation system used by the RAF in WW2. Sadly...
Above you should see some pictures of my most prized jacket, actually my most prized posession! As you can see the main zip has been replaced by Eastmans who also installed two replacement brass eyelets in the belt. Other than that it is original and in very good condition. I have now received...
Just seen an original "centrally heated" irvin jacket advertised on the Aero website, fitted with their own version of an A.M. zip. I am no expert on zips or engineering, but does anyone know why a repro manufacturer cannot simply take a cast of an original zip and make a perfect copy? I can't...
Each to his own I reckon, no doubt there are vegans out there who would argue that the worst crime was cutting up original WW2 sheep in the first place. I think Andrew and Soren have got it spot on, it would be a shame to recycle an immaculate pair of trousers, but a perfectly valid thing to do...
I hope so too, meanwhile could you be very careful crossing the road - if you get knocked down by a bus we're all banjaxed. Hope you are a fully paid up member of The Tufty Club!
