Biltmore makes a good hat, and the Ark is a good choice for a first fur felt hat. Are you sure you want black, though? I know you're the Dude In Black, but you might be better served with steel because grey's a more versatile color. I'm prejudiced, though, because grey's my favorite hat color.
Left to right: Pinzano Truman Milan; Dobbs Winner Florentine Milan with replacement pug; Dobbs Soul Tuscan Milan.
I broke out the Dobbs Soul once it started getting really warm last week after not having worn it since last summer, and I realized that it's not only the most comfortable straw...
You should be able to steam it until it softens and then carefully bend it down and sit it on a flat surface with a weight on it until it dries to flatten it.
Looks great! How does it fit? It looks a bit small, which is as it should be. It should ride a little high, no matter what you may have seen on Boardwalk Empire.
I've got two Nostalgias in 7 3/4, one from the HatCo outlet in Garland and the more recent one from The Fedora Store. They are both great hats, but almost two completely different animals. The older one is a lot softer and floppier, and the felt gets thin on the top because of how they...
I'm sure this is the effect you're talking about, Bernie.
The Winner's a fairly stiff, heavy Milan braid and there's a good amount of curl to the brim, so when you turn the brim down, the curl reflects itself in what you refer to as a "bubble" (I call it the "beak" because it looks like a...
They sometimes look tapered for some reason in the stock photographs, but mine isn't tapered at all and looks exactly like Panama Bob's, except for the aftermarket puggaree. I think what you perceived as a thicker brim was just the thicker welted edge where the wire is concealed. Anyway, I...
Dave, that looks just like my Pana-boater, which was made by Capas, which I introduce in this thread a while back. Panama Bob said a while back that he knew the maker and was going to contact them to see about distributing these hats, so I guess he did.
One of the selling points of the Capas...
I like the Avenue, it's a good looking hat. I bought one off eBay recently and it was way oversized (supposed to be a 7 3/4 but fit like an 8) and the crease was off center. I'm thinking it must have been a factory second. I'll see if I can get the sweatband to shrink up and try to steam it...
I got this Dobbs Winner the other day, and I liked it, but I wasn't crazy about the pug. Somehow, combined with the brim binding, it seemed too fancy to me. Perhaps a little too urban, like some of the Dobbs Steve Harvey line.
So I ordered a striped pug from Shushan's and just installed it...
Use a steam iron on a setting just high enough to generate steam, place the hat on a flat surface, place a cloth over the bowed-up area of the brim and press the iron and hit it with a zap of steam, then remove the iron. Don't press hard with the iron because you don't want to compress the...
Getting ready for spring, just got this Dobbs Winner today. Pretty good deal, $57 from Hartford York. I bought a 7 3/4, and the sticker on the inside of the sweatband said 7 3/4, but the tag, as you can see, says 63 - 7 7/8. Not sure what's up with that, but it fits perfectly. Very nice...
New Nostalgia in Caribou from the Fedora Store. I like it better than my old one from the HatCo outlet in Garland, which was probably a factory second. This one seems a little thicker and sturdier, with more snap to the brim. It's equivalent in stiffness to my Fed IV, which is the way I like...
