Interesting reading. My contribution is not going to be perceived as much of a help because my circumstances are markedly different from what I have read here. First of all I live in an apartment and not a house. I am retired and not married. I am a highly organized person who does not like...
I am coming to this Thread late in the game so these terms have likely been mentioned before. If not, here goes:
The "ameche", as in: "Hand me the ameche so I can make a call". Reference to the actor Don Ameche who played Alexander Graham Bell in the movies.
"Glad Rags" as in: "I need to...
I agree completely with your opinion. When I was young and stupid back in 1973 me and my friends would drink Southern Comfort straight out of the bottle while we were drag racing. For reasons that that are a mystery, none of us were killed or seriously injured doing this little stunt. Driving...
Again, as promised, here is a photo of the sting ray carving I purchased at the Polynesian Cultural Center on Oahu. Both the Tiki and the sting ray were carved in the Marquesas
Yesterday's incident with the razor cut and the use of a styptic pencil was an anomoly for me. It occurs perhaps a couple of times a year. I use one of those Gillette multi-blade razors when I shave.
I have done a fair amount of travel in my life and among the places I have visited is French Polynesia. Many people refer to it as Tahiti but this is just one of the Society Islands. Other well known islands include Moorea and Bora Bora. My avatar is a phote I shot from a motu (small island)...
So the title of this Thread is "Most Overrated Movies" so my comments, such as they are, concern movies I do not like and believe to be overrated. Dr. Zhivago is a movie I cannot watch and I avoid even the previews of this film when it appears on TCM. Any film that has been touched, however...
My first job was as a newspaper delivery boy. One of my customers was the family of Jon Miller, the San Francisco Giants broadcaster and former newtwork broadcaster for ESPN. I had a job unloading bread trucks for Kilpatricks Bread. During summers while going to college I worked in a local...
I just came across this thread this morning and I wanted to contribute something to the discussion. I have not read every post so this may have aleady been mentioned but here goes. I was shaving this morning with a razor (not vintage and I do have a beard) and I cut myself. I used a styptic...
Interesting thread. My maternal grandfather passed away in 1979 and he had two old coffee cans that he had filled with pocket change for many years. My mother opened the cans and they were filled mostly with old quarters but also some half dollars and dimes. All were pre 1963 silver coins...
I just came across this thread while browsing through the FL. If the Golden Era is primarily the 1920s and 1930s then based exclusively on physical appearance and the movie personna I would go with Jean Harlow and Louise Brooks.
For what it is worth (probably nothing), one thing I did not care...
I just came across this thread while surveying the outer reaches of the FL. I am going to severely date myself with my comments but here goes. I first started growing a full beard when I was in college in 1977. It looked good to me but I shaved it off after a couple of months. I regrew the...
September 7, 1907 - Maiden voyage of RMS Lusitania from Liverpool to New York. My grandfather sailed on the Lusitania as a second class passenger leaving Liverpool on August 27, 1911 and arriving in New York on September 2, 1911
Bucket: Based on the photo posted the coat is too large in general and not tailored to be flattering. I have several leather jackets that are quite expensive and I always have them tailored to fit my frame which is rather large. A good tailor could alter the garmet for a better fit.
When I have been among friends at an earlier age we asked ouselves what was the scariest move we ever viewed. I always said it was "The Wizard of Oz" with specific reference to Margaret Hamiliton's characterization of the Wicked Witch of the West. I agree with Fading Fast that part of the...
Back in about 2000 I I went to a dermatologist and he removed a basal cell carcinoma from my forehead and, as I was balding, he told me to start wearing a hat. I did some simple research and came across the Optimo Hat Company. I started ordering and wearing their products. I was soon hooked...
Here is a photo of a blue sapphire ring that I had designed at a jeweler in San Francisco. The blue sapphire has purchased in Hikkaduwa, Sri Lanka. Hikkaduwa is south of Columbo on the coast with aa beautiful beach. I was in Sri Lanka to rest after a much longer trip in China with a group of...
