Journey to Italy (1954) Again, an excellent European film: Some nice sportscoats The quintessential 1950s girl? I love the combination of classic menswear, girly, androgynous and casual going on at the party in the last two shots. Very much like the current 'anything goes'...

The usual stuff, from the movie 'Hotel du Nord' (1938) highly recommended: Is this one of those sunray ties discussed in the Chinatown thread? I like this plain jumper & sports coat look. Overalls with a braided belt. Strangely cool.

God, the egg opening etiquette and such stuff bores me to tears...

I like the Woman in question stuff a lot. A good mix of dressed up and casual. I like the way the subtleties in suiting describe the characters.

    Unappreciated masterpieces?

Love that film. Before the quirky bells and whistles started overwhelming his films.

Adam, I love how you spiced up a sober suit with the hat, tie and shoes. Very pleasing colours. Quigley, that is a cool shot!

    1920s suits

You get that same effect with 1970s shoulders... those narrow shoulders really made people's heads look big. The hairstyles didn't help!

Sold for $60!! US Ebay is the way to go apparently, even with the extra postage cost.

Awesome sports coat. Is it vintage?

    Return of the high waist?

But it might be that he simply accepted that it was a period style, so it would be a moot point to comment on it being weird or geeky or whatever. Great film btw, definitely made me appreciate Joaquin Phoenix as an actor.

    Return of the high waist?

True, but I guess it wouldn't be something new if it was 100% accurate repro. I think that if the style of perhaps not 'high waisted' but 'waisted' trousers enters the mainstream, it will be a welcome addition to the increasing number of revived retro things, and in any case will perhaps make...

    Return of the high waist?

This was prompted in part by Baron Kurtz's comment in another thread, I googled 'High waist trousers men 2014' and found this: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/her-joaquin-phoenixs-high-waisted-668298 Apparently they feature as a trademark of upcoming movie Her [about a reclusive...

    Pre-1950s British/European sportswear and leisurewear

Funny, I never noticed the second jacket. This is the one that looks like the Lumber jacket, with the ribbed sides.

Interesting cast! William Hartnell and Peter Lorre. I'm progressively going off the low button stance, mainly because I find it makes the jacket less practical (less coverage).

what a spot on choice of buttons to go with that pattern. they truly don't make em like they used to.

    Paintings that showcase vintage fashion

They have popped up here from time to time, but I thought they deserved a thread of their own: Portraits that showcase vintage fashion. I think they are important counterpart to photography for several reasons. One is colour, so often missing from the photographs of the time. Another is the...

    Suits - Pre 1920

Great thread, some details have presented themselves here that I would have otherwise overlooked. The 1909 Fairbanks photo looks a lot like a 1930s sporty outfit, except for that style of collar.
