Some of you probably know the site “Jet pilot overseas”. It’s got some great photos of 1940’s to 1960’s military jet jocks and ground personnel plus aircraft and equipment and clothing. It’s an excellent historical resource and I’ve learned a lot just by perusing their pics (USAF Squadron guys...
U.S. Wings is now selling these Navy shipboard cold weather/flame resistant deck jackets. These are brand new (apparently they are either a supplier to the Navy or they’re getting them through one of the contractors). Their selling price is $350; if you can find one used in good condition for...
Today I wore my U.S. Authentic G-8 and my wife and I took a 2-hour guided tour of the NYC subways, exploring abandoned stations, tunnels and other underground esoterica.
I just Googled some images of LW jackets and when you see that leather really broken in, you see the real character that develops over time. The brand new LW topcoat finish may look impregnable, but the real reward comes when you wear the hell out of it and your once-new jacket starts to...
@ButteMT61 Thanks Scott! I appreciate those words. That’s really what it’s all about: finding the right jacket to wear for whatever weather condition we happen to be in!:D
My wife actually collected my boat pics and had them made into wall calendars; we printed a bunch and gave them out to...
These up and down temperatures are crazy; when it goes from the teens up into the 50’s over night, you get heavy fog! A mariner’s worst nightmare. Friday we had zero visibility, rain and growler ice floes across the harbor. Nine hours of high-stress/zero-vis navigation through the always-busy NY...
Hi @Atticus Finch; very cool deck jacket! Great fit! I’m guessing the OD stands for “Operations Division” (Officer of the Deck is OOD) and 034 might be the individual number of the jacket (number 34 of ?) so that when the Supply guys issue you the jacket, they make a notation in their supply log...
Magnoli Clothiers does custom work and has reasonable prices.
U.S. Authentic (flightjacket.com) do military and civilian style jackets and can custom size them to your measurements.
I’ve heard great things about Johnson Leathers so I would definitely contact them as well.
@ButteMT61 the Great Lakes are no joke when it comes to ice and cold! I have great respect for the USCG and the other mariners who sail those waters. I think the locals who live up that way are made of particularly robust stock!
@Flightengineer you are right; usually the Hudson and East rivers are ice-free. However sometimes during a prolonged cold snap there’s heavy ice way up north on the Hudson (in the @Worf part of the world), up around Troy or Albany. The Coast Guard sends an ice-breaking ship up there to smash it...
Tomorrow the temps will be around 30F but there’s more snow in the forecast and the night crew on the ferries took these pics of heavy ice in the harbor. Going to be a fun day
As crazy as that may sound, I agree with @Carlos840
I used to go jogging in my LW A-2, especially when it was raining. That jacket broke in amazingly quickly and in no time at all it was soft, pliable and conformed to my shape, plus it had some great creasing and wrinkling in the 4oz HH.
If you can find one of these puppies, I think they are a “vintage-style parka” that will keep you warm and look very classic. Willis and Geiger are sadly no longer around but some of their stuff was fantastic. This particular coat just sold on eBay in unworn like-new condition for $265...
I’ve purchased numerous hats from them and they are all true to size. There’s a size conversion chart on their eBay site that will give you the cm to inch conversion for finding your proper size. They offer good quality hats in a variety of styles at a fair price.
@jonesy86 thanks for the kind words! I share your sentiments; @Worf is The Man and I look forward to the latest and greatest from Mr. Worf :D
I always try to have fun at work and do my best to enjoy what I’m doing (hence the smile).
Peace, Brother!
Thanks for the compliment @BobJ! Most days I do love my job; today however, with this winter super-blizzard blasting the whole East Coast it was long and arduous. It was so cold there was ice frosting the INSIDE of the pilot house windows! It makes me appreciate all the routine “boring” days :D
Huge blizzard hit the East coast today; 60 mph winds (almost lost the windsock atop the ferry terminal!), violent waves, snow, ice, freezing temps and of course whiteout/zero visibility! The Navy deck jacket performed admirably but goggles were a necessity if you stepped outside and faced into...
