Great question. I was born in 1951 and can remember the milkmen in white suits with black bowties and gas station attendants wearing ties. I'd guess it was in the late '50's early '60's it stopped, along with all kinds of service such as checking your tire pressure, cleaning your windows, etc.
I really have to hand it to Akubra: their sweatbands are, IMHO, the most comfortable of all the mass-manufactured hats, miles past Stetson. I was just looking at my brand-new Cedar Brown CD, and the sweatband is as soft as a pillow. I forget I'm wearing it.
I've noticed that Orvis has replaced its lambskin with goat for several of their jackets over the last year or so. I think it was a very good idea on their part. The lamb was horrible -- like tissue paper.
I know exactly what you mean. There's just something right about the style. With the exception of two Fed IV's I've gotten, all of my customs (including my PB hemps) have been in this design ever ince my first BGCD. It just kind of set the standard for me.
It has arrived! Exactly one week from the day I ordered it: kind of amazing when you think it's gone halfway around the world in that time. And Fruno, you couldn't be more on the money about the color. Really a deep, dark brown, with a reddish feel to it. I've been looking for this color ever...
Thanks. Ever since I ordered it I've been doing the requisite, idiotic re-viewing of the few paltry images on the web (most of them from here) and wondering how it looks on the head of the baggage-handler's brother in Bensonhurst. I always do this.
I finally ordered a Cedar Brown CD from the Hattery last week, and received a notice that it had landed at JFK over the weekend. Now I wait for the hat gods to clear it in customs and send it on south. The weather's finally starting to cool off a bit, so soon I can wear it with a nice brown...
I just noticed yesterday that Orvis has brought back their dark olive green corduroy vest. A bit pricey ($135), but it's a nice wide wale with a beautiful flannel liner. If you're interested you shouldn't delay too long, as these disappeared quickly last year (so I ordered immediately yesterday).
Hi, everyone. I'm thinking of treating myself to a couple of new Akubras and would like to hear some opinions. I have two Fed IV's and three CD's in various colors, including Silverbelly, but nothing else in a lighter brown color ( I do have a whiskey from Alley Kat). One hat I'm set on is a...
I remember coming home from an army-navy store years ago with a pair of Carolinas I'd just spent $15.00 on, and sitting on my bed marveling at what a great deal engineers were and how they protected the nation's factory workers from the toxic sludge of the factory floors. $1, 950.00?
I'd like to respectfully disagree with HandyMike's comments. I've been wearing Fryes since the '60's and have seen them go through a number of changes over the years. I think what's happened with them is that, like a lot of the bigger companies, they've evolved into a firm with a more expensive...
Great minds think alike. When I got my whiskey from Tim at Alley Kat he suggested a pencil curl, and I wound up liking it so much that all my custom considerations now include the curl. I also discovered the usefulness of black when I received my black Fed IV, which I wear (weather permitting)...
