I would love to splurge on a few true bespoke shirts sometime, but recently in my weekly thrift store rounds I came across a cashe of Brooks Brothers dress shirts in various solids and stripes, 100% cotton, obviously all dumped by the same person who happened to be my exact size. I could not...
I recently scored a lot of 500 ties on eBay for less than $.35 cents a piece, shipping included. They were delivered this morning and I just finished sorting through them. Found only two from the 1940's, but a few dozen from the 50's & 60's. The rest are modern and in perfect condition. I figure...
First, what is OFAS? And, could you possibly post a photo or scan of the bird tie? I've never seen it in color. Please, let me know if you ever run across another. Thanks.
Want to sell it? I'd pay good money for any of these particular ties, especially the bird one. In fact you could have your pick of my collection for the bird.
For me it was probably my grandfather, George Anderson Amerson.
My grandfather was born in Mississippi in 1900, but grew up mostly in Texas. He never went away to war as he fell into the age that was too young for WWI and too old for WWII. He got a job with the railroad when he was a...
The other day I caught WHITE HEAT for the very first time, on TCM. I don't know how I ever went so long without seeing this iconic film, but it was worth the wait.
I agree with John. Old buildings really do it for me.
A few years ago I had the opportunity to explore an old four story bank building from the 20's or 30's. The ground floor was renovated and occupied by a business, but the floors above it had been closed off for years and were like a time...
People (the general public at least) often think of film noir and detective/crime films of the noir era as one in the same. While we know that's not necessarily true, what would you say are the best DETECTIVE (as in private eye) films of the era, noir or not?
The Maltese Falcon
The Big Sleep...
My favorite post Golden Era movie car would have to be Herbie, the Love Bug. HE was supposed to be a 1963 ragtop Beetle, but in creating the many cars used in the films, they used year models ranging from '58 to '67. I've owned a '66 and a '67 Beetle and seriously considered making both of them...
It's said that Hollywood wardrobe legend Edith Head, who's final film project was DMDWP, created 20 vintage-style suits for Martin to wear. However, I can't count more than five used on-screen, unless there were multiples of each one made as back-ups, as Hollywood often seems to do.
Spent some time this morning getting screen captures of all the ties Steve Martin wore in DEAD MEN DON'T WEAR PLAID. One of my favorite films of all time, and probably the source of my obsession with vintage 40's/50's ties.
I would agree with you on most 70's ties, but I do have a handful of them that I'm very partial to, and will be keeping. They mostly fall into the "so ugly they're cool" category.
This is my entire collection of vintage ties from the "Bold Look" era, thus far. It's about a quarter of my overall tie collection but the one era I've decided to concentrate on. I'm selling off all my others on eBay - well over 200 in all, from the 50's, 60's 70's, to present.
Forgive me if someone has already posted this somewhere. But it's just something I ran across and thought it might be of interest here: Bogart's navy pinstriped suit from Dark Passage. It recently sold at auction for $1673, which seems rather cheap to me for a screen-worn suit of such a famous...
I just read the thread. Thanks for the info. I have done a bit of initial research since my original posting, and have found several companies that will digitally print one-off or short-run designs fairly cheaply as long as I supply the digital artwork ready to print. Doing it on absolutely...
I'd choose brown, but that's just my personal taste. I have a couple of brown suits it would go with. But then again, burgundy would go with a blue suit as well as a brown one, so that might be the more versatile choice.
