    Stingy 1930s

I saw on another thread that someone posted pictures from a 1942 Apparel Arts catalog here on Fedora Lounge and it showed a page explaining that men who attend sports activities prefer smaller brimmed fedora's.

What was the last TV show you watched?

    LL Bean Catalog Fall 1936

This catalouge answers a lot of questions. I didn't know "comfort oxfords" existed back then. I wonder if they became a popular shoe during the '30s.

What era does this suit convey to the forum?

I agree with everyone else, late '30s early '40s. The hints to me are, the vest and the fact that it's tapered. I noticed WWII and postwar suits didn't have tapering I think in part to war rationing and or the "bold look" after the war made it passe.

The Dumbest Comment I Ever Heard

I never really get negative comments when I wear a fedora and suit. However, where I live in Brooklyn I normally just see people staring at me. I've gotten compliments from people, one woman at my school in Manhattan said I looked very "Revolutionary Road" when I was wearing my gray-pinstripe...

    Recognizing 40's clothing

From what I've seen in photo's and movies, the lapel sizes became smaller in the '50s. Even the double breasted lapels became a moderate size compared to the 1940's suits. The late '50s was start of the modern skinny lapel, skinny tie, small brimmed hat look.

    Leather Heels

I had been wondering that myself. From what I've seen in photographs and movies, both the rubber and leather/rubber combo heels have been around at least since the 1910's. I origionally asked the local shoemaker to replace my worn out rubber heels with all leather ones (I thought it would look...

    Question about shoes?

For bad weather I wear my everyday rubber soled Rockport dress shoes. Rain is very unforgiving on new leather. I prefer to wear my leather soled shoes to my college classes and sometimes I have had to walk 6 avenue blocks in the rain. I noticed that my shoes with broken in leather are tougher...

    Show off the sports coats.

That's an interesting jacket. I think the low lapel notches hint it's from the 1980's.

    Question about shoes?

I prefer leather soles. When I took a pair of shoes to the local shoe repairman he reccomended rubber be added to the soles because they last longer, but I asked for leather ones anyway. Could one buy rubber for the soles back in the 1920's to the 1950's?

summer styles of the 30's, 40's and 50's?

Boater hats were big in the '30s. They were still worn in the '50s but I've noticed from old movies and photographs that the panama hat was worn more starting in '40s and '50s. Panama hats have made a comeback in the last couple of years, I've been buying them since 2005. I wish the boater hat...

"Mad Men" on AMC (US) - (Spoilers Within)

I'm really looking forward to season 3. In my opinion, Mad Men is the best show on television. I like the fact that the creators try their hardest to make everything as historically accurate as possible while maintaining a good story. Every episode makes you want to find out more about each...

    Spectator Shoes

I really like those black and white spectators. I've searched all over the internet and the only place that sells a similar shoe is Remix Vintage Shoes. Do you know any other websites with shoes like that?

    NYC's Film Forum

Film Forum I went there in December to watch Max Fleischers underrated feature "Hoppity Goes to Town" (a.k.a. Mr. Bug goes to town). It was a nice experience complete with a Betty Boop cartoon before the feature. I dressed in 1940's inspired dress casual clothes to further heighten the old...
