Traditional double-stitched hiking/mountain boots, as modeled by Sherpa Tharkey in Tintin in Tibet:

Possibly my favourite shoes of all time were a pair of 1950s Florsheim wingtips I inherited from my wife's grandad. Every bit as good as old Church's or Loake. Unfortunately my Bouvier puppy thought so too, and devoured them. I found a pair of almost unworn 1980s Imperial wingtips in a thrift...
Great jackets. I've owned one (in tan) for about 20 years - the Duck Detroit, not the Roper. Worked in it, hiked in it. Still going strong (and still standing up on its own, in fact!). Some spots of creosote here and there only add to the charm.
Silvermans '1940 SAS Smock'
Anyone seen these in the flesh?

They look the part, but the 'heavy cotton drill' they mention wouldn't...
Hello all,
I'm another new arrival (Actually I joined a few years ago but churlishly didn't introduce myself). Living in a particularly fashion-challenged corner of the USA, I came to the Lounge in search of info on Irvin jackets and hair pomade and found an unbelievable amount of both. Now...
I have a pair of Red Wing Chelsea boots, which are incredibly comfortable and incredibly tough - and leather-lined. Worn almost solidly for two years in every conceivable weather condition and the sole is only just starting to wear down. I'm starting to think they may be a better deal than my...
Thanks, hpalapdog. I didn't realize that Hanwag still did traditional styles. Some good boots there for sure - tempted the wife as well!
What I find with moulded soles is that if they don't suit your feet, you've had it, while the old-school ones will (eventually) conform to your arches etc -...
Altbergs
People do love Altbergs, but they aren't leather-lined, unfortunately. I have to say I care less for appearance (after the first encounter with a Dartmoor bog that isn't going to matter anyway) than for leather lining and a stitched, lugged sole.
Closing in on either Crispis or...
Last find of the day, and if I can track these down... Crispi Mineurs: http://www.crispi.it/en_index.php# (you go to 'products' and select 'country spirit' from the drop-down menu).
"How are your feet feeling?" "Quite Crispi- thanks for asking."

A French boot: http://www.paraboot.com/main.asp?groupID=2&topicID=1&subtopicID=4&prodID=1
A very nice Italian boot: http://www.calzaturificiodiemme.it/ENGLISH/CACCIA_ENG/CAC_rocciavet.htm

You're right about the Van Gorkums, of course, but that kind of outlay puts them in a bit of a holding pattern, behind an ex-MoD Land Rover (a case can be made for necessity); an original, wearble Irvin or an Eastman repro; taxes...
Possibly, on another hard drive... I'll have a look. It was an excellent replica, the only flaw, if you could call it that, being that the hook-up covers on the sleeves and waist were stitched all the way around, but all in all that's pretty minor...
Buttons for 1944 issue leather jerkin
Quick question: where might one find the proper replacement buttons for a British Army leather jerkin? I use mine quite a lot (gardening etc) and it's lost all but one button along the way.
Reading through the monster Irvin thread I was startled to come across quite a few posts relating to an Aero jacket I sold on ebay a couple of years ago. It was a copy of an original electrically wired Irvin I'd bought from Aero but couldn't justify keeping (I wanted a wearable jacket but it was...
...And then you find something that really ruins your day...

It's a toss-up between the Ortlers and those Merrells - which are Italian (Asolo?). The Merrells are more trad-looking but the Ortlers are cheaper and nearer. I'll give a full review if and when I make my choice. What might sway my decision is that the Ortlers have a Gore-Tex lining underneath...
Narrowing it down to a pair of Meindl Ortlers - http://www.huntingandoptics.com/acatalog/info_127.html - should be just what I need, providing they don't discontinue them in the next month or so!
