I just caught this on YouTube. I was so proud to see that fellow, who I respected for his incredible creativity, is from Massachusetts. I never realized we had such a large steampunk community here. Part of that was filmed in my neighborhood. Very cool.
I was wondering about the fact that Nimoy is playing the aged Spock, and since Vulcans live longer, he could be quite old. It made me wonder whether the film was going to be framed as a remembrance from Spock.
Sometimes a fresh perspective can add a lot to a franchise. Take the new Doctor...
The young Spock is perfect, almost disturbingly so. He reminds me of Spock from "The Menagerie," the Captain Christopher Pike era Spock, which makes me wonder if they are going to ignore the entire Spock was loyal to his first captain (Pike) angle.
I do have faith in JJ Abrams, hopefully not...
I just caught the latest trailer and I hope I'm not getting over excited, but to me, this looks like the coolest movie to ever come out in my adult life. I'm going to allow myself to get carried away over this one.
The special effects look amazing, the casting looks perfect, the uniforms are...
This is addressed at the idea of the thread and not in any one person in particular.
I see the Lounge as one large community with a vast diversity of members who are free to exchange ideas about the style, sounds, and culture of vintage life. All are welcome to exchange ideas freely...
Wow, what a great thought; matching everything, it appeals to my OCD tendencies. I like the idea of that. I certainly don't think it's required, but it would certainly make a statement on your night stand.
As for me, most of my leather goods are Louis Vuitton items I've picked up on my...
As a general rule, I stay out of any sort of buffet service. I don't need to go to a restaurant to stand in line with my plate in my hand. How can that food possibly be up to par, especially from a cuisine that is designed to be served hot from the pan?
Also, any chain like P. F. Chang, I...
I like Mickey Rourke, call it residual appreciation for his work in "The Pope of Greenwich Village." However, he didn't nail this look. I hope he sticks to the Gautlier jackets and matching pocket squares.
He would have been fine here without the hat, with engineer boots or some such thing and...
Well, with all due respect, we discuss all sorts of films here and do not hold them to a vintage standard. There is no problem or issue with discussing this film here.
Carry on!
I'm reading "Paris: The Secret History," by Andrew Hussey. It's an interesting book and not just because of the intriguing subject matter. This book discusses the history of Paris by following the typical chronological method, but bringing in elements of events from all eras to compare it too...
The problem with "cool" is that is substitutes for other necessary descriptive phrases.
If you ask someone how a movie was and they tell you it was "really cool" they really haven't told you anything, have they?
That's my problem with "Cool."
However, if I am trying on a pair of pants...
"The Third Man," come on people. :)
The swinging jazz soundtrack of "A Touch of Evil."
Kubrick's use of "The Blue Danube Waltz" in "2001:..."
"Lawrence of Arabia." "Raiders of the Lost Ark."
And for pure fun, "Highlander," "Pulp Fiction," & "The Aviator."
Michael Nyman's work on...
The 70s were an interesting decade. There was a lot of good and a lot of bad. Leisure suits were not a highlight, but then, they were suits! Disco also wasn't a highlight, but people did go out in groups and dance together.
I rather liked the sportswear. Take for instance, those Bogner ski...
Yes, it was on stage that I was referring to. I watched it in HD as well. Her eye make-up looked terrible to me and that is unexpected from one as sophisticated as Ms. Witherspoon.
Sadly, the necktie with dinner jacket trend has been going on since the
1980's. It is beyond the trend stage and into the area of acceptability, at least in Hollywood, and certainly with the prom scene.
There is something very Art Deco about Marisa Tomeii's dress there. I rather like it...
I watched this last night and I must say that, overall, it showed a return to the glamour of the past. Most men wore traditional dinner jackets and many of the women's gowns were either vintage, as in Cruz's case, or modelled after a vintage look.
Ms. Bella is absolutely right about Natali...
What a comprehensive review. Bravo.
Leonard Cohen is absolutely brilliant. "Hallelujah," "The Future," and "Dance Me To The End of Love" are some of my favorites.
