Trust me, you don't want the heavy tan "CHL" leather they were offering. The jacket I had made using that leather (pictures earlier in the thread) still hasn't broken in enough for me to comfortably wear it. That leather is t-o-u-g-h and nothing I've done has made it submit. I'd sell it on but I...
As I have stated earlier in this thread, I feel like I'm nearly done with 5*, at least for a good while. They really need to do two things to improve the customer experience:
1. update their website with recent, good quality pictures of the available hides and other custom items as well as a...
I dont know…..at that time, 5* was using leather not as good as what seems to be on offer now. Mine has a topcoat, for lack of a better word that chips off. It squeaks to the point I can’t wear the jacket around my wife. She can’t stand the sound nor can I. Ive tried baby powder and tumbling in...
Conic glazed is the same as Conic but, according to Shawn, it is "waxed distressed" and while Conic is "supple leather" the glazed "is little stand in nature". I have asked a variety of questions lately about this and a few other hides. There is such limited info on the website. Replies are few...
Hi. It's warm but it's on the thinner side. I don't know how it will be long term.
The quilted satin is also warm. Both are warmer to me than the cotton drill they use.
There is a lot of radio silence from 5* past couple weeks. I ise WhatsApp, IG and email and replies are few and far between.
I submitted a purchase request several days ago and …. No reply. He/they are either super busy or sick or ?? Oh well.
The horse is kinda what I’m thinking too. The only pics are on 5* website (I copied here a page or two back). We have one member with horse on his shearling jacket and it looks good. He says it’s good quality.
It’s a leap of faith for another unknown to me hide from 5*.
edit: sorry, no idea...
Sorry, two more questions. Do you recall the thickness of the horse hide and has it started breaking in (eg: creases, etc. and not the "rubbery" return to "new" look that some of Shawn's leather sports)? Thanks
This might be the one I get. Shawn told me today that this is the "Conic Glazed and after that waxed distress". I know that the FiveStar website pictures leave something to be desired....but this seems like pretty nice looking color. Leather is goatskin, 1.2mm thick. Anyone have direct...
I think, ultimately, sending the jacket maker your leather is a process that some people really like. There is no doubt what you are going to get in a finished product. OTOH, you won’t know what sort of leather you are getting from Shawn (or maybe some others) until you have it in hand if you...
I believe that Shawn’s operation is capable of taking that expensive leather and turning it into a great jacket for lower labor costs and at a faster turnaround than high end brands. This may boost the appeal to some folks. Just my $0.02 worth.
Thanks! I need to go back and search this thread thoroughly for your previous posts. I recall that you put up a lot of different pictures and experiences with the various leathers from 5*.
In some previous correspondence with Shawn, he stated that they have lots of new leather in a large variety...
