Fastuni, that's a nice idea, but i doubt very much this was a purpose-made hairdresser's suit.
hairdressers nearly always wore the typical cotton unstructured workwear type of garments, similar to ship's stewards, ice cream salesmen, delivery boys and all of that ilk.

i think Bob Dylan's early bored, cynical, confrontational, flippant interview style was more influential than the Beatles' more cheeky one. i'm sure they were influenced by his persona themselves.
the last two are by Meredith Frampton, not Whistler... sorry my captioning could have been clearer. he did several of these painstakingly realistic portraits. apparently his output was rather small because they took so long. have a look at his 'portrait of a young woman' (with cello) from 1935.
Fastuni, that suit might be what put the image in my head. i'm not suggesting it is a uniform, but it might be a suit which was tailored for some sort of specific sporting / riding use.
four buttons and a straight front is very unusual though for a sports jacket of that date.
maybe it's the slight 'uniform' look of the jacket but i keep imagining it with matching breeches.
quite right Flo... there were the waist seam suit jackets of the late teens (usually with s single vent) but this isn't one of those.
what i meant on the previous page was that frock coats are hard to date because they always look (at first glance) Victorian or Edwardian when they might be later.
