    Learning to Dance

All good points. Just a couple of comments: Use equal and opposite pressure. In other words, if your lead uses a lot of his weight when you pull away from each other, use your weight to match it. If he uses just a little, use a little of yours to match it. This is for the rock step in EC and...

    Learning to Dance

Lead Smoothly Like the Champs Lately I've noticed quite a few East Coast dancers who are rough with their partners: guys pushing out their partners out like a lawnmower, throwing them around, and yanking them back. Not good, not authentic, not pleasant to look at--and not likely to get them...

    Can you identify this plant?

Might be better to use some sturdy scissors to get a sample. I don't think snipping a leaf and a seed head would hurt the plants.

    Can you identify this plant?

This is purple fountain grass. Can you ask the property owner what kind of grass it is? If not, find a local plant society--they should be able to tell you.

    Entering Dreamline.

Two Bobs I dreamed it was winter and I was supposed to get married at my parents' house. The wedding dress was white and came with a purple petticoat, but my mom washed them together and it turned the dress purple. The guests were there. The office called and asked for a partner who wasn't...

Khaki on Kahki? The wife says no...

My boss says she's seen women fighting over stuff at Wal-Mart. Adventure, indeed.

Khaki on Kahki? The wife says no...

You don't want to look at it and say, "That almost matches." (Or look like you're wearing a uniform.)

    Sound of Music....

Could be. But I was thinking more about the time the story was set in. I had the impression they were married in the 30s, not 1927.

    Lindy Hopper DJ Music Selection

There's a message board out there just for swing DJs. I don't know the URL, but I'm sure a Google search will turn it up.

    Sound of Music....

It seems the filmmakers used quite a bit of artistic license.

I bet this one was popular during the swing revival.

    Name That Tune

...when the nightengales sang in Barkley Square. Sung by Bobby Darin, among others. I know some of you know this one: "When the congregation starts to sing, nothin' in this world don't mean a thing."

If you said you looked like one celebrity from the Golden Era...

"I want to be let alone" Garbo, more in personality than looks. I read that she didn't show up to claim an Academy Award, didn't give interviews and didn't answer fan mail. I haven't gone to my last two birthday parties, don't usually chat people up, and don't have a Myspace or Facebook page...

How to make new clothes look dirty? Help?

Put on the clothes and work on your car. Your air cleaner, tire pressure and fluids should be checked anyway.

    Cocktail parties: Country-Style

As I'm sure you know, people will generally give you a pass if you're part of the group you're poking a little fun at. Initially, it wasn't clear that that was the case. So--apology accepted. Many of my relatives fit the redneck stereotype, but would hate being called that. It pays to use the...

    Cocktail parties: Country-Style

Indeed, some of the senators and representatives from the West are ranchers. My father grew up poor and rural, and I'm amazed at how well he remembers songs he hasn't heard in 50 years. ETA: Music generally comes from the bottom of a culture, not the top. Isn't some of the best classical...

    Cocktail parties: Country-Style

Start by eliminating the word "redneck." Serve some familiar food and drink (even if it's beer, sandwiches and melon balls) with nice dishes and glasses. Play some jazz they might be familiar with. I know it's not strictly jazz, but some old R&B songs are originals or covers of country or...

    Let's Retire These Movie/TV Plots!

Let's retire the plot where some kid is smarter than all the adults around her. A realistic plot would be a tear-jerker where the kids are smarter than their dumb/drug addicted/alcohlic/absent parents.
