Welcome, marvelgoose. You're instincts are onto something with the "parody" thing. Here's the scoop: Back in the '40s - '60s (maybe earlier and possibly a little later) those Xs were useful and accurate reflections of the quality of the hat in terms of the beaver fur content and softness and...
Tooch, Billy and Aureliano; all very good looking fedoras you guys hauled in.
---------------------
Hey Aureliano, I'm looking forward to seeing you participate more fully here. I always enjoy your posts and it'll be more like I've met you. Just make sure you're comfortable with the call...
Hmmmm,.... that's interesting for sure.
To make my situation even murkier, there is no size tag and the sweat band has been replaced with one bearing no insignia. Oh well. Thanks for all the info!
So what's the story on the ones with the embroidered liner art but no plastic or oil cloth covering at all? The old 7X I recently obtained has the same liner as yours, Vic, but with no evidence whatever of any covering over the art. I'm guessing that's early '40s??... [huh]
I'm a lefty just like you described. Not only does that slant add panache but it does seem to sometimes be a result of certain head shapes. I know my head is knotty and a hat is usually more comfortable with the ol' Southside Slide goin' on. Also, my right eyebrow tends to ride up a lot so it...
Usually, I've noticed, the photos from underneath tend to show the felt color most accurately. It's probably because the camera meter is able to 'white balance' on the liner.
So, Bob, is it more grey or taupe - - and as Jimmy stated; either way it's a beaute'!
Yeah, I hesitated to put too many pix because I thought it might not be on topic with the title but Jimmy has started an interesting series of comparisons, so here's another couple of shots.
By the way, I actually used an old fashioned micrometer tool to measure the thickness of the felted in...
I suppose that's possible but when I compare my single Stetson Mode Edge to my Dobbs, Warner, Disney, Knox felted in edges, what I note is that the Stetson version is 'deeper' back onto the brim. I mean that while some of the others almost appear in the shape of a chord going around the brim...
Definitely use Naptha outdoors. It's very dangerous stuff to breath and very flammable. I will use indoors only to spot clean but soaking should be outside and away from ignition sources.
As for eyes, I use one of those magnification headsets like engravers wear when I do the sewing on old...
Rusty, you're startin' to look almost respectable. lol I knew we could lure you over to the 'Wide Side'.
rlk, that's another winner. You are one of the "he can pull of almost any hat" guys. And you've got some killer shirts too.
AND, as Dinerman detailed to me in a PM he sent, the felt characteristics of these individually labelled models changed (declined) over the decades. He stated that he has handled several 7Xs and no two were really the same feel.
