Recommendations for starting point to research British life during WWII?

The TV series "1940 House" might also be helpful. Although it's set in LONDON rather than in the countryside.

    Fireplaces and Stoves

I didn't find a thread about this anywhere on the Lounge. If there is one already, I apologise. It didn't show up in any searches which I did. So this will be the Lounge's resident discussion-thread about fireplaces and stoves of the wood/coal-burning variety. I'm sure I'm not the only...

Some watches have double casebacks, for added dust & moisture protection. I have a couple of watches like that.

    Cufflinks and Shirt Studs.

They're not gold. I don't see any hallmarks anywhere. They're probably brass. A buff-up and a treatment with Brasso ought to do the trick. Temporarily, at least. It may not even be worth doing it.

    Shave of the Day

There are quite a few people on the Lounge who straight shave. I'm one of them. I gave up D.E. razors a while back, and now use a straight permanently. My blades are rather humble, but they do the job.

    Cufflinks and Shirt Studs.

I purchased these earlier this week for not very much at all (and I got a discount on them!). They look pretty old. I guess they're Mother of Pearl or something. My guess is that there isn't anything especially incredible about them, but they do look nice.

Gentlemen, show us what you've made!

We all have our skills and limitations. I'm certainly no professional, but I torture my grandmother's Singer from time to time, making little things. Bags and pouches and such. One day, I'd like to buy some denim and make myself a shoulder-bag. I've been trying to buy something nice, but I...

What kind of bow tie is this?

They're called shoestring ties (also called Bolo ties). They're very old fashioned. According to Wikipedia, they date back to the 1860s.

    A Blank Canvas

LISTEN TO THIS MAN. The house I live in has the same butt-ugly 'popcorn' look on the ceiling as well (also built in the 60s/70s) and it is just hideous - to say nothing of a damn mess whenever it crumbles off into dust on the floor. Fortunately we only have it in one room in the house, and...

Show us your Thrift and/or yard sale finds

Dad and I spent some time in the country this weekend. We left on Saturday morning, and went hopping from town to town. We stayed the night in a little motor-inn, and then did more hopping on the way home. We were religiously checking out every single antiques shop in every town that we drove...

Gentlemen, show us what you've made!

Dressmaking is what women do. My grandmother was a professional dressmaker for 50 years. TAILORING is what MEN do.
